I have been to many conferences over the years they all almost all have entertainment to accompany the regular purpose sessions. I have no idea what went on there but playing a video game and having a party means nothing, even if "on their dime." We have no idea what percentage of the time this represents and what else was covered. Nor do we know the circumstances. A lot of these conferences are optional for teachers. So while they may not pay for it, they are choosing to be there on their time. Of course the organizers are going to try and mix in some fun activities. That's what any good organizers would do.
By the way, who’s dime are we talking about because the article says the event was organized by the teacher’s union and was held in the summer? That would mean “their dime” is the union’s, which gets its income from the teachers. |

Maybe, she meant "on their dime" to mean that someone already paid for the video game, then walked away from it, leaving some time to play still on it!
Thats happened to me before.
See, I can spin stuff in whacky directions too.
Still, nowhere as dumb as that O'Donnell witch. |

I'm not a supporter of unions, but most of what I saw was likely the cocktail hour. Every convention I ever went to had a networking or social hour. I'm not defending what was said, but I don't take a lot of the comments as actual views or practice.
The only session I did see that was of interest was the one classroom session at the end talking of out of control kids. However, I too have seen kids so worked up that they simply could not calm themselves down. So I do think having non-violent intervention courses is key on how to calm down a child who is physically emotional.
In terms of the Cranbury teacher, I don't have any facts and can't conclude anything.
If this was paid for by the school it's easy enough to find out. Call the office and ask. They have to tell you if the town paid for this conference and what teachers went. |

Typical distract and blame everyone else tactics by the njea even when caught red handed worrying more about their concerns instead of the childrens. Blame the governor and any political party you like. However in the end the njea from the top down needs to look in the mirror, fix it's house and realize they are in the business of educating our children.

Assuming this is an isolated incident, it would appear to be a lapse in judgement that caused embarrassment for our school district. I think an apology would be appropriate. |

Exactly what would she be apologizing for? I haven't seen it established what she did wrong. |

So a teacher makes some stupid, off-hand remarks that cause a little bit of embarrassment and somehow its the Governor's fault? What's wrong with expecting the teacher to accept responsibility for her remarks, apologize (or at least clarify), and move on.
Something like, "I learned a lot of valuable lessons at the NJEA conference that I am bringing back to Cranbury. Unfortunately, some of my comments about the conference were taken out of context. If they caused any embarrassment to my district, I apologize." Its a lot better than ending her comments with "screw you". |

So your rule of thumb is anytime someone is quoted out of context they need to apologize for being taken out of context? That's ridiculous. And no one else is consistently held to that standard, absent all the facts. I don't think we have enough information to be making assumptions about what she may or may not have done that warrants apologizing to the community. And until such facts make it clear, she is innocent until proven otherwise. She's also not a public figure and it seems inappropriate to be slinging comments around in a public forum that she didn't ask to be discussed in. |

Talking about embarrassment, there is no bigger embarrassment (in NJ education matters) than our fine governor's royal screw up which lost $400,000,000. |
