Update on Hurricane Sandy from Mayor Cook

Dear Cranbury Residents,
As a result of Hurricane Sandy the state as well as the township has endured unprecedented damage primarily from wind and wind related issues. Flooding, unlike Hurricane Irene has not been as much of a problem. On Storm day plus one the primary focus was aid to those who needed emergency help and assistance. This was handled quickly allowing our fire and rescue teams to focus on other storm related issues such as recovery from less severe emergencies. Simultaneously our Police and public works departments worked in conjunction with each other to identify road hazards and fallen trees with live wires. We were able to locate streets which were blocked and then reopened with the help of public works removing trees and debris.
On Storm day plus 2 the focus was to get power back on in town in areas that were affected. I have been on the phone constantly with the Office of Emergency Management (OEM) for PSEG as well as OEM for the county. As of Storm day plus 3 power has been in place for Shadow Oaks, Cranbury Green, Plainsboro Rd, The Griggs track, Cranbury Neck Rd, South Main St and the Four Seasons. Sporadic power has been restored to parts of Station Road and Maplewood Ave.
I know that power has not been restored yet to North Main St, downtown North Main St. The Evans track, Peddie Road, Silvers lane parts of Maplewood, Station Road and Wynnewood Dr. I have been told by PSEG officials that the lines that were downed North of us in on RT 130 in Dayton has affected power coming in from the North which serves electricity to North Main St. all the way down to the firehouse and the Evans track including Silvers Lane. PSEG hopes to restore power once the lines on RT 130 are brought back on line. Our hope is that will occur over the next couple of days.
I ask you to please call the Cranbury police department at 395-0031 if you are without power. We need to know who does not have power so that we can direct PSEG to those homes and areas.
As for Halloween, The state has designated that Monday November 5th to be official Halloween. I have not heard any change to this date as of Friday 11/2. In addition as of the time of this writing we are scheduled to have our normal elections held down at the Municipal building on Tuesday November 6th.
I understand the frustration of those still without power. I myself do not have power and is uncomfortable to say the least. There will be additional information to come about a warm up shelter in one of our local churches for those without power and heat. I assure you that I as the Mayor and the other Township Committee members and the Township Employees are doing all that we can with the resources we have. I will update you with more information as I get it.
