Bike path markings - Old Cranbury Rd

Who thought it was a good idea to put bike path markings on Old Cranbury Rd.? Not only does this road have no shoulder, but the markings are right in the middle of the car lanes. This was definitely a dumb idea that could get a cyclist seriously hurt. It’s bad enough when cyclists ride 2, 3, or even 4 abreast, but give them a false sense of safety, and something bad may happen. I witnessed a group of cyclists coming out of Old Cranbury Rd onto Old Trento Rd without stopping or looking. They simply moved into the middle of the road as if they were in a protected charity ride. Now add these markings, and trouble is waiting. Just plain stupid.

39:4-14.1 Rights and Duties of Persons on Bicycles.
Every person riding a bicycle on a roadway is granted all the rights and subject to all of the duties of the motor vehicle driver.

39:4-14.2, 39:4-10.11 Operating Regulations.
Every person riding a bicycle on a roadway shall ride as near to the right roadside as practicable exercising due care when passing a standing vehicle or one proceeding in the same direction. A bicyclist may move left under any of the following conditions: 1) To make a left turn from a left turn lane or pocket; 2) To avoid debris, drains, or other hazardous conditions on the right; 3) To pass a slower moving vehicle; 4) To occupy any available lane when traveling at the same speed as other traffic; 6) To travel no more than two abreast when traffic is not impeded, but otherwise ride in single file. Every person riding a bicycle shall ride in the same direction as vehicular traffic. In New Jersey, the law states a bicyclist must obey all state and local automobile driving laws. A parent may be held responsible for the child’s violation of any traffic law.

Not sure what they were thinking when this was done.

I don’t think it’s a question of a car hitting a cyclist in a 25 and 40 mph zone. I believe it’s more of an issue of giving cyclists a false sense of protection from traffic. These markings do not identify true bike lanes.

How many bicycle accidents happened on this road in Cranbury over the past 10 years in the 25mph zone where these are. None of these are in the 40mph zone.

And the current Mayor was touting these as a grand achievement. Ridiculous and will probably cause more problems than solutions.

Pull up the 2022 budget, bicycle network plan, $120,000, Fire Chief vehicle, $100,000. I'd much rather have the Fire Co. get a new vehicle than the idiotic sharrow bicycle signs on Old Cranbury Rd.

Maybe we could use some of the $2,500,000 budget for the police to patrol Old Cranbury Road to keep bicyclists safe. We could turn the bicycle logs blue

Why make a big deal about our volunteer Fire Dept They do a great job on the cheap and require as much training as police

What an absolute joke of a comment above. Maybe they should look at the numbers and response for the good ol boys and girls from the “great Volunteer” squads we have. Fire and first aid is a joke and the township committee that continues to fund and allow them to operate should be terminated. Maybe we should just give the money to Monroe Fire and ems . They respond and handle the majority of ours calls anyway.

You have absolutely no clue what you are talking about. Monroe has not responded to any Fire calls in town. Further, the town is legally obligated to provide a Fire Department. Of course by following your logic the TC would get what they seem to want and pay millions of dollars a year.
