I'm absolutely sickened by this entire project - start to finish. I cannot believe our town built the field for Babe Ruth, let alone now have it turned over because it doesn't meet the regulations.

Anybody consider getting the scope of the contract and have the vendor back in to fix? I guess the school teams can get use out of it...unbelievable.

The field meets regulations for Babe Ruth. However, if it stayed a Babe Ruth field the town would be under obligations to adhere to the Babe Ruth restrictions in terms of use. The league could dictate who could use it, when and how often.

By designating it a Regulation Field and not a Babe Ruth field the town and residents can use it how they feel appropriate, though it's no longer a Babe Ruth field which means very little to the town since there were zero Cranbury residents playing last year. So while many feel it's simply a name change in what it is called, in actuality there is a signifigant impact in terms of resident use. It still meets the size and other requirements.

So, the TC "sold" us the field as something that would be used by a few kids in town.....now we're talking about a ballfield for all?

Well, we can get the out-of-towners to come in on a Saturday and Sunday afternoon, yelling and screaming, and leaving their trash behind. Like they do when they use the soccer-fields, and they can't throw their water bottles and energy bar wrappers into the garbage can. I guess it's too far to walk to the garbage can.... Is that what we can look forward to?

Oh well, at least the 400+K will finally be used.

Do people just like to complain. If it's for a few residents people complain that it's a waste of money for only a few. If it's now open to all it's that it should be used for only a few because of trash. The only option left is no one should use it at all.

I don't believe the project ever should have been started. However, now that it has and can be set up for use what do people want? I'd prefer to have the use of it if I want to take my kid and have batting practice or her friends and play a game on a Saturday. Granted, my first option would be to go back in time and stop it from starting.

The issue seems to be the cost of maintenance after its completion. If it becomes a sucker for $$, it will be a mistake that people in town will be talking about for years.

If you folks feel that it's going to be a block hole for $$, wouldn't it be better to stop it now?

So we have a ballfield built almost entirely with county money that will be open for all Cranbury kids to enjoy. And this is a scandal? A product of some secret, hidden, unspoken agenda?

I thought the unspoken agenda had more to do with what DID NOT get built on that site.

Will CPLL get to use this site? If so, it will be well-used by many Cranbury kids.

Now that it's not a babe ruth field it should be open to the public. I think it's too big for offical CPLL games, but it could be used for practice, school games, or pick up games by these kids. I would still not put in the dugouts, bleachers, etc... and stop as soon as the field is usable. However, at least now it's not restricted use or should not be.

The lights will be on the roof of the new library which will be built next to the ball field.

The county money was all spent on the field. The town is out of pocket for any additional expenses.

it would be great to have a nice ballfield just for pick-up and school games. Get rid of the fence and have families come out and play....just for fun!

The March 19, 2009 Recreation Commission meeting minutes have been posted.

http://www.cranburytownship.org/rec_minutes031909.pdf
...
Regulation Baseball Field, Field Issues

1. Beth will send an e-mail to Pari Stave, Mayor, to let the Township know that the Commission would like Ed Sekelsky to represent the Commission in meetings with the Township, Engineer and Contractor. In the past, the Commission hasn’t received much information from the Township regarding the baseball field. Ed Sekelsky also stated that he had sent to the Township in December 2008 a punch list of what the Commission had wanted done to the field. –

2. The Commission would also like a punch list of what the Contractor still needs to do, and any deadlines that they have to adhere to. Dawn will follow up and get these from the Township as soon as they are available.

3. The Commission had a few questions for Christine Smeltzer, Township Administrator. Christine Smeltzer stated that if the Commission had any questions concerning the fields they should contact Jerry Thorne. She also stated that Hatch Mott MacDonald is checking on the Contractor to make sure he’s doing what he should be with the field. She also stated that the punch list is being prepared by Cathy Marcelli, Township Engineer, Hatch Mott MacDonald; and Jeff Graydon, Township Zoning Officer.

4. The Commission would like Jeff Graydon to attend the next Meeting. Dawn will invite Jeff.

Regulation Baseball Field Fees – The Commission would like Dawn to present the fee schedule for the new ball field to the Clerk for the Township Committee to approve.
