I wish people would stop dancing around such a simple issue. It is no surprise that the library wants their own building. They have $500k+ socked away for furniture. The question is...
Should the Township pay for it?
(higher taxes)
Or should the library pay for?
(same taxes)
Or should the library give their annual surpluses back to the Township?
(lower taxes) |

Cranbury Press wrote: | Library Director Marilynn Mullen said the library Board of Trustees will discuss whether renovating the building for use as a library is feasible and cost effective. | .vs. WHAT? What is the library comparing in this study we need a baseline?
Will the Trustees also study the feasibility of merging with the Plainsboro library .vs. PNC?
Will the Trustees study how to cleanup all the old books and make more space in our current shared library. Maybe stretching our current shared arrangement for another 10yrs would buildup enough funds to get another space in the future so we wouldnt HAVE to raise taxes.
But I doubt it any other ideas will be part of the so called "face finding". The Library already has made up its minds that they want another building that's bigger, needs more staff and will cost the Cranbury taxpayers more to maintain.
I find these so called "fact finding" missions to be little more then a payoff to a consultant to state in the report that Library already wants to do, and that is to buy the PNC building. Let me save you $40K on the report, it WILL say that buying PNC is feasible.
Because there will be no other options under investigation as alternatives there will only be one possible outcome. And I bet in the report, no merger with Plainsboro will be investigated at all or any other option.

The objective of the study, she said, would more-or-less be a “fact finding” mission.

Would you want to merge our schools with Plainsboro? |

Why snipe? Attend a library board meeting and tell them how you feel.
I think it is great that they are looking into options. They can not
buy something on their own because the township actually has to own the building even if the library puts money toward it. Let us wait to see what the library board finds out. They are a public board so we can go to the meeting and see their minutes online. |

Except this meeting is not posted anywhere.
I find it highly ridiculous to connect a merger of a school with a merger of a library. In fact, we do have many public shared services including sewer, courts and 911. I like our own library, but I also don't want to pay more in taxes today. |

With all due respect to the previous poster, attending a library board meeting to protest a stand alone library is probably a waste of time. It isn't that the library board is evil, or foolish, it is just human nature. Good luck trying to convince ANY organization that they don't need a big, new facility to better serve their constituents. Frankly, it would be shocking if the library didn't want their own building.
The reality is:
1. The town has planned for a stand alone library.
2. Since the reassessment, the library has a huge surplus, which makes this an opportune time to push for a new building.
3. The choice is basically between buying and renovating PNC, or building a new building (thus, the study).
The main question is, how much (if anything) should the Township pay toward the new building? |

My contribution to the library based on the assessed value of my home:
1% x assessed_value = $7,200/year.
You can calculate your share and see if it is worthwhile to contribute more. |

I think your calculations are wrong re. contribution. It is 1/3 of a mil
of assessed equalized value. In other words, about $100.00 per taxpayer or resident. It could out to be 1% of our residential taxes. |

Yes, simple. $500,000.00 on reserve in case the school asks the library to leave and it has no home.
Township could pay for it and ask voters in November
(higher taxes)
Township and Municipal Library partner to see what can be done for no increased taxes
(same taxes)
Or we vote to not have a public library
(no lower taxes as township would find a way to spend the $100.00 per tax payer) |

Correction:
The calculation should be 1/3 of $0.001:
($0.001 * assessed_value) /3
* Before revaluation (2006):
(0.001 * $245,000) / 3 = $81.67
* After revaluation:
(0.001 * $720,000) / 3 = $240
I hope this is correct now. |

Can someone from the Library let us know if this is open to the public? |

I believe the calculations above translate into the following round numbers...
Currently the state requires local taxpayers to fund libraries at $33 for every $100,000 of taxable property.
$300,000 Home = $99 per year
$600,000 Home = $198 per year
$900,000 Home = $297 per year
$1,200,000 Home = $396 per year |

If the public library gets squeezed out, and then we have to go to Plainsboro or Monroe and pay $150.00 per family member for borrowing privileges ...and plus the fact that my kids can't walk there after school. No summer reading program... I think we need to see what the library board finds out. It is worth looking into. |
We're a tiny township. We ultimately control the school as well. In theory the School Board could try to take unilateral action against the Library but I seriously doubt they would and if they did the likelihood is they would be replaced in the next election and the action would be reversed. |
