Sirens

Isn't it wonderful that the Sirens have been silent by day for some time now - due, apparently, to technical problems?

And yet our noble Volunteers are still being successfully called out, as they are by night, with pagers and texts. And the fire trucks are still blaring their way down Main St - alerting all and sundry that they have been summoned and that our great team of Firefighters and Emergency Technicians are on the way.

If the noise of the fire trucks alone is not sufficient to remind the residents of Cranbury that new Volunteers and Donations are always needed, why not keep the Siren silent except for a brief sounding at noon every day to let everyone know of the fine work being done?

This is the practice in a number of communities around the country and it's a suggestion I have recently made to the Cranbury TC.

Every time Richard Moody complains about noise, an angel's wings spontaneously combust.

It was Santa on the firetruck. You know, for the enjoyment of children? Cram it, Debbie Downer. The sirens are silent, and so you find something else to complain about. What else is bothering you, Mr. Moody? Too many happy children? The sound of decorations rustling in the wind keeping you up at night? You haven't been able to complain about sirens for months, this is like your Christmas wish come true. You have been given the greatest gift of all, the ability to take to the internet and complain. It's a Festivus miracle.

Mr. Moody,

We get it. You dislike the siren. You have made your comments known for many years. Yet, no action to support your position has occurred.

I have no vested interest other than if my home were on fire with my kids and wife in the home I'd want every siren, text, pager or other device going off to summon help.

I hope and pray that I never need the services at my home. However, if a siren gets even one extra member out then to me it is worth it. That one extra member could be the difference.

May I suggest that like a neighbor living near a train you ignore it. Once you let it become background noise you'll never hear it.

Lastly, I want to thank our volunteers for driving Santa around town.

Please go back to whatever god forsaken place you came from. This blog was finally peaceful until you decided to go on your childish little rant about the siren. We are all aware of your severe dislike for the siren and we are all sick of hearing about it. I personally can not wait for it to be fixed so that we can hear the sweet sounds alert the VOLUNTEERS of an emergency.

The Sirens went off at 5.40 am and 5.47 am this morning - Wed Oct 9.

Isn't there a moratorium on the use of Sirens between 10.00 pm and 6.00 am each night?

Maybe they went off as no one was responding. I don't know the protocol and would guess most posters here do not. However, having had to use their services I am glad they do respond however it's done. If you had an emergency and no one showed would you be okay with the siren going off or would you let your house burn for 15-20 minutes and then say okay it's 6am they can sound the siren now?

There is an open house Saturday why not go ask the volunteers what they were doing that early?

Sorry, but 15-20 minutes early to me is no big deal if it means the difference between helping or not helping someone.

The fire department should just reinstall the old air raid type siren, that one was much better.

Given the economic climate and historical nature of the town I suggest we bring back two positions.


1) a town crier to notify residents of every news event.

2) a person who will beat the old alarm (hanging train wheel) by the fire house. This way no one can complain as we're doing seething historical.

Of course if the siren is modern enough maybe it can play recorded sounds. In that case the Fire company should record the clanging of the train wheel with someone yelling fire fire and use that sound over the siren. Then never shut it off like the old days. Hear a ringing sound and someone yelling you know there is an emergency.

I believe the name calling and attacks are rude and unwarranted. I would hope these are not typical residents.

I did try to inject humor.

I too don't like the siren, but I don't like a lot of things. I don't like amount of cars going down my road or that I pay school taxes without kids in the school.

However, if I didn't have the road by my house my commute would be longer. If I didn't pay school taxes my home would not be as valuable.

If I didn't have the siren then maybe it is the difference between getting somewhere in time and not.

You can cite all the studies in the world, but that is paper. I look at the practical. I can't see the future so if we do everything we can to get people somewhere faster than I am good. It's a necessity. It is not a paper study on should the town pave a road or dredge a lake. No one does in that study.

Now one can let something bother them in which case the situation gets worse. Or you can ignore it and let it blend in. The choice is yours. I lived near an airport. I got used to the noise and after a while did not hear the planes. My neighbor hated it and would be bothered all the time. He was a nice guy, just bothered all the time. He felt horrible all the time.
