I keep hearing the issue of school security being raised. My question is, how hard is it to improve security at the library during school hours? If necessary, we could have a security guard at the library door during school hours for $10k-$15k per year.

10 to 15 K a year! You're kidding right? The school is having a meeting on its financial crisis and you want them to spend 10 to 15 thousand a year on security.

I think the posters point was that the librayr, not the school, spending $10-15K a year would be a lot cheaper than building a new building for $3M plus annual operating costs.

And before you say its a school issue so the library shouldn't pay, don't be silly. Both are operations of the township and we should be able to divide responsibility any way we see fit and it would not be unusual as a condition of their lease for the school to impose conditions like paying for security.

Yes. My point was that hiring a security guard would cost less than heating and cooling a new building.

Since you brought up the school budget crisis, if the library moves out, the school is out $50k. So while I don't think the school should have to pay for the security guard, it would still be a positive financial move to spend $15k to retain $50k.

Maybe, with improved security, the school could contract with the library to provide library services to the school, instead of operating in seperate silos as they do now. That could save money, as well.
