Donations sought for Skeet's Pantry
Tuna fish and canned fruit. Some frozen turkeys and hams couldn't hurt, either.
These are the items Skeet's Food Pantry, of the First Presbyterian Church of Cranbury, is most in need of right now.
"But, of course, we'll take anything," said Fran Stewart, who runs the pantry.
Right now, volunteers at Skeet's are working to put together at least 45 food baskets to give out for Christmas. And though the bulk of donations usually comes in around Thanksgiving, Ms. Stewart said it's important that people still remember to give now.
Any non-perishable items, including hearty soups, pasta, pasta sauces, nutritious cereals, oatmeal, macaroni and cheese, and powdered milk, are all needed, she said.
"I also buy some fresh vegetables at Christmas," she said.
"Potatoes and sweet potatoes and things that aren't highly perishable. I get them a few days before."
Ms. Stewart said the need for donations is even greater after January.
"What happens is, right before Christmas and during the holidays, you, of course, get a lot of donations," she said. "And then after the holiday, it drops off. But that's when the weather gets bad and the need rises. So, I usually have a little cushion for January and February and in March it's a nail biter."
