N.J. Turnpike Authority sets 4 hearings on widening plan

The New Jersey Turnpike Authority will begin holding public hearings this week on a massive project to widen more than 20 miles of the New Jersey Turnpike between Burlington County and Middlesex County.

The authority still doesn't know how the estimated $2 billion needed to fund the project will be raised or how the project will fit into the governor's yet-to-be unveiled plans to make more money off state assets.

“The financing aspect of the project still has to be addressed,” said Joseph Orlando, spokesman for turnpike authority. “We've said that from the very beginning. It is a lot of money, but this is probably one of the most critical and necessary transportation projects the state's ever undertaken.”

It's certainly one of the largest. Plans call for the turnpike to be widened from six to 12 lanes over the 25 miles between Exit 6 in Mansfield to Exit 8A in Cranbury, Middlesex County.
