CRANBURY — The Cranbury Township Public Library trustees have named a new library director, and it didn’t have to look far.
Longtime library employee Marilynn Mullen was selected by the library board of trustees Oct. 11 to replace Howard Zogott as library director. Ms. Mullen will begin Jan. 1, when Mr. Zogott, who has been with the library for seven years, officially retires. She will be paid an annual salary of $56,400.
Ms. Mullen has been with the library since 1998 and has held a variety of positions while there. She holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Siena College, and a master’s degree in library science from Rutgers University. After earning her bachelor’s, Ms. Mullen went to work as a computer programmer for Lockheed Electronics in New Jersey. A Cranbury resident since 1986, she moved to the town with her husband, Paul, soon after the birth of their third child.
A full-time mother while her kids were young, Ms. Mullen was involved in several local organizations around Cranbury, including the Boy and Girl Scouts. She began working at the library on a part-time basis after seeing an ad for an assistant with computer experience.
”I loved the little Cranbury Public Library,” Ms. Mullen said. “I would take my children there for story times and summer reading.”
After two years of working as an assistant, Ms. Mullen was promoted to technology services administrator when Mr. Zogott became director in 2000. Her responsibilities included managing the facility’s electronics, purchasing new equipment and updating software.
In 2001 Ms. Mullen went back to school, and earned a master’s degree in 2003. She was elected to the Beta Phi Mu International Library Science Honor Society.
Upon her graduation she began working at the library full time, and was named technology services librarian.
”The degree got me the librarian at the end of my title,” Ms. Mullen said.
