Cranbury school budget up slightly

CRANBURY — Tuition to Princeton High School and planned repairs to the Cranbury School roof are forcing spending up about 6 percent and could result in a 5 percent school tax increase.

The Board of Education introduced a proposed $16.6 million school budget for 2008-09 on Tuesday, an increase in spending of $956,178.

Under the proposed budget, which will be presented to voters April 15, the school tax rate will increase 4.13 cents per $100 of assessed valuation to 85.46 cents. At that rate, the owner of a home assessed at $668,923, the township average, would pay $5,716 in school taxes, a $276 increase.

Board member Ken Griffin, who made the budget presentation, said the budget met two objectives. It provides every child in the district with the best possible educational opportunities and maximizes the use of available resources, he said. The budget also allows the school to continue some of last year’s initiatives, including the wrestling and field hockey teams and book clubs for grades two through eight.

The budget also maintained a technology integration and improvement plan, which allows additional procurement of interactive chalkboards and staff training, he said.

”What we have is a fiscally responsible budget that maintains current programs and allows us to continue new programs,” said Chief School Administrator John Haney. “This budget is responsible to taxpayers and students.”

Tuition for students attending Princeton will grow because the per-student-rate and enrollment are both increasing. The estimated number of students from Cranbury expected to attend PHS increased 6.7 percent, raising the total from 253 students to 270 for 2008-09. Princeton will charge $16,749 per student, up from $15,817 in 2007-08. The overall tuition will be $4.5 million, up $593,858.
