Wittman won't seek reelection

CRANBURY — Committeeman Wayne Wittman will not be running for re-election in 2008.
Mr. Wittman on Monday said he’s happy with what he’s managed to accomplish after almost a decade of service on the Township Committee, but that he feels it’s the right time to step down.
”I’ve been doing this for nine years,” he said before Monday’s Township Committee meeting. “I’m looking for other opportunities.”
Mr. Wittman, the lone Republican on the five-member committee, has served three, nonconsecutive terms on the committee. The first from 1993 to 1999, the last year of which he was mayor. He lost a bid to Democrat Greg Overstreet in 2000 and later ran and was re-elected in 2005.
Mr. Wittman said the accomplishment he was proudest of was establishing a program as mayor in 1999 that allowed the township to purchase land to use for open space and farmland preservation.
”That’s the essence of this town — agriculture,” he said. “Until that point we waited for other people to buy it.”
Mr. Wittman also said he supported and enjoyed working with the Police Department during his time in office.
”I always wanted to give our men and women that are out there the right protection,” he said.

Ddn't they just have the electrions last November? Is he just announcing he will retire this November or sooner? I don't get it. Will he leave early and they will leave the position open, or are they going to have a special election. The article isn't very clear. |

It's simple. Mr. Wittman's trem ends 12/31/2008. His seat will be up for grabs, and he won't seek reelection. That means anyone who is interested in Mr. Wittman's seat can start planning, right Jeff M.?

I was very disappointed when I read that article today. I have to give thought to it now. I had hoped he'd be reelected and I could run the following year. I still work in NY, so I have to see if my practice leader will be flexible with me leaving early. |

The township committee has five people serving on the committee. Each person serves a three year term and then is up for re-election. Every year there is an election for the committee, 2 years is for 2 positions and 1 year is for one position. Wayne was elected in 2005 and his term is up this year. He has served Cranbury well in this term as well as in previous terms on the committee. He is not leaving early, he is not running for re-election.
That said, there will be new candidates running for this election. This year is for one position, next year will be for two positions.
The candidates need to file by April 7 to get on the Primary ballot. I am Chairman of the Republican Party in Cranbury and we are considering candidates to put on the ballot. If anyone has an interest in running this year or wants to talk about running next year, please contact me.
