Cranbury police targeting traffic
Grant to help with enforcement

CRANBURY — Cranbury police are implementing new safety measures thanks to two grants totaling $30,000 the department recently received.

Both grants are federally funded, however the New Jersey Division of Highway Safety filters the grant money out to various departments throughout the state.

A $10,000 Aggressive Driving Enforcement Grant has allowed the department to purchase a traffic counter as well as add extra shifts to survey township roads, said Sgt. Frank Dillane, a Cranbury officer, who has spearheaded the recent grant approvals.

The department has used approximately $3,300 of the grant to pay for a counter, he said.

A counters are tubes that lie across the road and detect traffic volume, speeding and class of vehicles traveling, Sgt. Dillane said.

The counter will eventually enable police to target specific areas and times where aggressive driving has become a problem.

”Most crashes occur as a result of aggressive driving,” he said. “The goal is to minimize or lessen the amount of crashes. That’s the narrative for this grant.”

With the remaining grant money, Sgt. Dillane said the department will be funding extra traffic coverage for weekday shifts.

The shifts run Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. and from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., he said.

”(Route) 130 is one of our primary focuses, but our residential areas are always a concern too,” he said
