Cornerstone Gets $6 Million Investment to Fund Cancer Drug Trials

CRANBURY — Cornerstone Pharmaceuticals Inc., a privately pharmaceutical company developing drugs in the area of cancer bioenergetics, announced today that it has raised at least $6 million from a private investor group. It said it plans to use that money primarily for clinical trials in the United States and Canada to evaluate the safety and efficacy of its bioenergetic compound, CPI-613, in a variety of cancer types.
The compound targets changes in energy metabolism associated with the majority of solid tumor types, Cornerstone said in a statement. It has shown potential use in several non-clinical studies, including those that used biopsies from patients with lung, colon, pancreatic and breast tumors resistant to traditional chemotherapeutics, the company added.
Bioenergetic compounds focus on the similarities between multiple cancer types rather than the differences between each, Cornerstone said; it is developing two technology platforms for cancer cells, including a nanotechnology-based delivery system.
