If you are a grandparent you need to know about this. We were called and it was a pretty scary call. Whoever it was wanted us to send $5200 by Wal-Mart money order to our grandson in Calgary. Claimed he had been in an accident and needed the money to pay Avis so they wouldn't press charges. Our grandson was supposed to be on vacation with his folks when we got the calls but we thought maybe he didn't go with them.We didn't send any money but we sure talked about it. If you Google "Grandparent scam" you will see how widespread this scam is.
There were 4 calls altogether, two that my wife took and two that I took. We both were convinced it was our grandson. In retrospect my wife thinks she gave them our grandson's name when they first called. Caller "Grandma it's me"-- My wife-- "Brandon?"

I wondered how did the scammers know that you have a grandson on vacation? |

| We talked to the police and they said they just call randomly until someone bites. |

I see. I was thinking that the scammers might have gotten a hold of your personal info.
I heard about this kind of scam before from a relative living abroad. The scammers used a fake, crying young girl to ask the grandparents for ransom money. According to the news reports, some grandparents did wire a large sum of money to the scammers' bank account! |
