Central Jersey nets federal aid
Thursday, May 07, 2009

A local agency and two municipalities are among many statewide set to receive a share of Neighborhood Stabilization Program funds amounting to $49.4 million.

Gov. Jon S. Corzine yesterday joined Elizabeth Mayor J. Christian Bollwage and Department of Community Affairs Commissioner Jo seph Doria in announcing the award of 35 grants to 22 municipalities and two counties.

Trenton is in line for $2.5 million in funding; Allies Inc., a Hamilton- based agency that provides services for people with disabilities, will receive $625,000; and Burlington City will receive $1.7 million.

"It is critical that we take action to mitigate the destabilizing affect foreclosures and vacant homes can have on our neighborhoods and that is why these Neighborhood Stabilization funds are so impor tant," said Corzine.

"These funds will provide much needed assistance in improving the health and viability of our communities and position them for future growth. By keeping our communities strong, we are keeping New Jersey strong."

The money comes as a result of the Housing and Economic Recovery Act of 2008. The NSP is specifically intended to stabilize neighborhoods experiencing the negative effects of the subprime mort gage crisis and the general economic downturn.
