CRANBURY PRESS: Primary results are in
Thursday, June 4, 2009 1:33 PM EDT
By Maria Prato-Gaines, Staff Writer
Tuesday’s primaries were a night of twists and turns with a local favorite’s upset on the Assembly level and numerous write-in campaigns at the local level.
In Cranbury, 344 residents out of 2,691 registered voters came out to cast their ballots, according to the unofficial results.
Launching a last-minute write-in campaign for the two available three-year Township Committee seats, Cranbury’s Democratic Party chairman received 46 votes while resident Dave Cook received 52.
Also vying for committee seats were Republican candidates Jay Taylor and Dan Mulligan, who received 171 and 172 votes respectively.
On the Assembly ticket, incumbent Democrats Assemblywoman Linda Greenstein received 83 votes while Assemblyman Wayne DeAngelo received 79.
On the Republican ticket Brian Hackett of Monroe received 132 votes, Rob Calabro 45 and William T. Harvey Jr. 56.
Although according to the unofficial report, Mr. Hackett received the majority of Middlesex County votes, pulling in 1,939 votes compared to Mr. Harvey’s 1,013 votes and Mr. Calabro’s 950, Mercer County’s voters had the final word leaving this Monroe resident short of the Republican ticket for the general election.
Mr. Hackett said he was pleased with his performance in the primary and the support he received from Middlesex County. However he said Mr. Harvey and Mr. Calabro may face a tough road in November.
”The best candidate doesn’t always win the primary,” Mr. Hackett said. “The general election is a whole new ballgame. I think these two candidates will have great difficulty winning the general election.”
In the race for governor, GOP candidate Chris Christie received 125 votes and Democratic Gov. Jon Corzine received 69 in Cranbury.
In Jamesburg two three-year Borough Council seats are up for election. Locally, the local Democratic race was tight. Thomas Busco received 96 votes; a recent appointee to the Borough Council, Russell White, received 98 votes; and another appointee, Councilwoman Brenda Deans, received 70 votes.
After quickly launching a write-in campaign for their candidates, the Borough Republican Party’s chairman, Gregory Newton, received 13 votes, while resident Corrine Larsen received 11.
In the race for the Assembly, Assemblywoman Greenstein took home 89 votes while Assemblyman DeAngelo walked away with 82 for the Democrats.
For Republicans, Mr. Hackett pulled in 96 votes, Mr. Harvey 51 and Mr. Calabro 35.
As for the governor’s race, former Republican candidate Steve Lonegan, who conceded Tuesday night, received the majority of votes in the borough with 80, followed by 68 for Mr. Christie and 66 for Gov. Corzine.
In Monroe, three three-year Township Council seats are up for grabs, with two incumbents running and one seat vacated.
For the Democrats, Councilman Henry Miller received 771 votes, while council President Gerald Tamburro received 712 and newcomer Stephen Dalina received 147.
On the Republican side, Deborah Schneider received 434 votes, William S. Hoover received 609 votes and Michael Leibowitz received 353.
As for the General Assembly, Assemblywoman Greenstein received 1,796 votes while Assemblyman DeAngelo received 1,626 in Monroe.
In Monroe, residents voted for Republican Assembly candidates as follows: Mr. Calabro with 489 votes, Mr. Harvey with 502 and Mr. Hackett with 1,053.
In the race for governor, Mr. Christie received 1,075 while Gov. Corzine received 1,687 votes. All-in-all 711 of Monroe’s 8,296 registered voters came out on Tuesday, according to the official results.

The Cranbury Democratic Write in Ticket is Dave Cook and Shahnaz Shahidain
This post was a cheap ruse. Obviously an attempt to subvert the Democratic party choice of Dave Cook and Glenn Johnson. The vast right wing conspiracy strikes again. |

What is amazing to me is that DeAngelo actually received votes from Cranbury voters. I can't understand how even blind partisanship would enable someone in this town to support someone that has blatantly disregarded the community. |

LOL. Or maybe we couldn't organize quick enough at the last minute and so people recognizing Glen's hard work establishing the democrats and David and his dad as a long time supporters as a reward for thier efforts. Glen has worked hard with others to establish the Dems as a power base in town. |

Agreed. But it just proves how many people have no idea who he is and just automatically check the box for the member of their registered party. Which is how people like him get elected and stay in office. I would be shocked if they guy got even 1 vote from Cranbury if every voter understood who he was and what he was about, given what clear contempt he has shown for our Township as a whole. |

Gotta love the quality journalism of the Press. The article refers to one fo the write-in candidates as the local Democratic Party Chairman and never mentions his name... |

69 knuckleheads voted for ...
Jon COAHzine.
The guy who doubled COAH obligations, jacked the turnpike tolls, cut property tax rebates, cut aid to towns under 5,000 people and is pushing towns like Cranbury to consolidate, not to mention literally sleeping with the opposition during union negotiations, the school funding mess and the ongoing "special" municipal aid, which is simply money to buy votes in the cities.
Corzine is trying to destroy our town, and 69 residents voted for him. I'm curious what they were thinking. |

What I would like to see right away is for Mr. Cook and Johnson come out and publicly say they do not feel they or anyone should support Corzine or DeAngelo in town. It would be good to know that they are candidates for our town. |

That would be a refreshing change from the current committee members who are Democrats who have used meetings to publicly laud Greenstein even as she was not supporting us on COAH, etc. while downplaying Baroni who was our only State representative to support us. That is what caused me to start changing my voting locally and at the state level despite being a registered Democrat. They should look to the last election and see that the Republican one in a township with more registered Democrats. That was for a reason. |

Just as I suspected, It was a right wing ploy to have the democrats write in the wrong candidate. This reveals the truth. The Cranbury Press left wing bias is actually a cover for their right wing bias. The Cranbury Press is a triple agent!!! |

The only thing RIGHT about the Cranbury Press is how far left they have been over the years in their reporting. |

Since they are write-in; I'd be interested in knowing if Dave Cook and Glenn Johnson even want to be TC members.
I am one of those people who votes for a canadate who is passionate about the job and can add value to our TC (no matter which affiliated party). I am skeptically about the last minute write-ins.
All I know is that Dan and Jay have been at most of the township meetings in the last couple of years and always stated their ideas in a clear and informative manner. In my mind, they know the strengths and weakness of our town and are willing to do what is needed. |

I know a few mentally challenged people and they are not knuckleheads. Corzine is a knucklehead and that is polite. The fact we had so many residents vote for him and DeAngelo tells me they don't care about the town and just their own little world. |
