From the Oct 26 TC meeting:

Quote:
Mr. Cody stated the speed limits should be consistent for the entire roadway and presently the speed limit is different once a driver crosses at the red light at South Main Street and continues on Old Trenton Road to Route 130. Mr. Stout agreed. Mr. Feranda responded he will try to get the speed limit consistent.

If I remember this issue correctly, the speed limit on OTR came up a few years ago, with residents from Cranbury Greene complaining that the traffic was going too fast through the neighborhood at 50 mph. (long ago, it was marked 35 mph. I think the history is that someone complained about speeders, somebody else researched it and found out the speed limit should actually be 50, but they marked it 40 to slow down the traffic.) It is common on long roads to have sections of different speed limits, so drivers should be able to deal with this. I feel like having it all marked 50 mph is undoing something that was put into place to improve safety along that section of OTR. The kids in CG often cross OTR, plus the cars do 50 anyway. Put the SL at 50 and they'll go 60. We don't want that.

Quote:
Mr. Stout asked if the mail box has to be on Main Street and Mayor Stave suggested the Township speak with the Post Office and request they move the box.

This is ridiculous!!! There should be a mailbox in front of the PO. Everyone who uses the mailbox without parking in front of it will now have to change just because a few people are not following the rules? Even the person who spoke up about this at the meeting had a better solution - enforce the no parking regulation.

1) I'm confused about your statement above. Is the suggestion that the speed limit be increased from Main to Route 130? It already is listed as 50 from One Mile Rd to Main. I thought the problem was it was too fast along there and not that it was too slow from Main to 130. Contrary to the above statement, they did NOT mark it as 40 from Main to One Mile Rd -- it does say 50. And it makes no sense right now. It is slower from 130 to Main, despite no houses being directly exposed to the street in this section, then increases to 50 from Main to One Mile Rd during a section where some houses front the street, some are open and exposed from the rear or side and there is a public park. But then once you pass One Mile Rd into Mercer County it immediately slows to 40 MPH again despite that stretch being all industrial park with parking lots and no housing. How does that make sense?

2) Are they kidding about the post office box? Another in a long line of bad ideas from Mr. Stout. What possible reason do they have for wanting to remove it? It is both convenient where it is and a tradition in almost every town in America. Dumb, dumb, dumb.

The county used a ridiculous method for determining that the 50MPH speed limit is OK on the Main St. - One Mile Road stretch.

They measured the speed of traffic for 2 weeks or so, and determined that 85% of the traffic drove at or below the speed limit. They gave absolutely no consideration to houses, parks, pedestrians, driveways, cross streets, etc.

All this means is that the road is wide enough for most people to feel comfortable to drive at 50MPH or more, and the county completely disregards the residents that live and play along this road.

That still doesn't explain why they succeeded in getting it to 40 MPH between One Mile Road and Princeton-Hightstown, which makes no sense. The road is wide there and it is an industrial park zone with no pedestrian or residential concerns.

It's marked 40 on the section from Main St to Rt 130. That's the section I'm (original poster) talking about. The section from One Mile Rd to Rt 571 is 40 - don't know why, but I think it's because it's a different county. I agree it doesn't make sense to have it 50 through Shadow Oaks and 40 through the industrial park section.

My suggestion would be to make it 40 all the way from Route 130 to Rt 571.

The no parking is being enforced. I have seen a few cars ticketed in recent months and people who are in their cars told to move. This does not seem to be as big a problem as it is made out to be here.

40 Mph on old trenton would be way to slow. It should stay 50. There is hardly any foot traffic on it, yeah I know joggers and bikes. yeah yeah. It should stay 50 and I'm trying to get the county to make it a passing zone again. For some reason people are either to scared to drive near the limit or just don't pay attention to the signs. It's rediculous. I think the best plan would be to make it a 4 lane where the space permits to get all the residents that wish to drive slow and clog up the road, a lane of travel without having the people who drive at a reasonable speed tailgating them. Also, I'll have to look into the reason East Windsor has a 40 limit between one mile and 571. I agree, that makes no sense at all. 50 then slow down to 40 then back to 50 in less than a mile. Who knows, it may be that way so they can catch alot of people speeding. It works too, they always have people pulled over. lol. Have a great day!

This is most unreasonable and ridiculous idea I have read so far.

Do you know there is a bottleneck (traffic lights) on each side of this stretch of road?

----+TL1+--<Bridge>====== Old Trenton Rd.========+TL2+----

Your design is basically a trap for accidents.

How much time do you gain by driving at 50 MPH for one mile vs. 40 MPH? 10 seconds, which is less than waiting for the traffic lights.

And, your chance of waiting at the traffic lights there is not reduced if you drive 50MPH or drive on a four-land road.

Here is a tip for people who want to travel from A to B fast in NJ: avoid traffic and traffic lights.

Driving fast won't save you time if the path has traffic and many traffic lights.

I always slow down where the park begins. 45mph, down to 40mph when I see people playing soccer. I started doing that after a ball was kicked out into the street last year. Just my 2 cents.
