to require users to register with a valid email address and user id (no Yahoo or Google acct.'s as these are a dime a dozen) so people can take responsibility for their posts....what do you think?

Only paid subscription will work. This way there is a record of payee's name and address (e.g. credit card, paypal, etc.). |

If it is that important to you then start your own message board.
You could call it www.CranburyBigBrother.info |

Is this a joke post? Paid subscriptions? Why would anyone do that? |

No, It was not a joke.
How do you make people "take responsibility for their posts"?
It's not possible without requiring the users to provide their name and address. So how do you require people to provide their name and address? |

The new version of PHPBB that this very forum is running on has new capabilities for more responsible (yet still anonymous) posting. Its called anonymous identities with a system that will allow any member to flag posts that are deemed inappropriate (its called community monitoring) Many blogs and News agencies are using this type of community policing of its content, so its not rocket science. Its only a mater of upgrading this site to the latest version of software. PHPBB is at 3.06 currently, I think the version we are using is still back in the 1.x.x so its about 5 or more years old already. |

Welcome to the Internet. The reason I thought is was a joke is you are advocating trying to get people to behave atypical to the entire medium. If they required people to pay to participate, virtually no one would and someone would just go and setup some comparable free community somewhere else. If you're goal is the shut down the site it would succeed, but that's exactly why it is not in the self interest of the site to do so.
Most people who post on communities like this -- and there are thousands -- like the anonymity. Does that lead to people saying things they wouldn’t if their real name was on the record sometimes? Absolutely. But that is the state of the Internet. You don’t have to like it, but that’s reality and you can’t force it to be different. You can choice to participate or visit the site or not. You can disagree with it, but you can’t expect that you can make it something other than what people want to use it as.
Now there certainly are middle grounds such as requiring registration, which still allows some anonymity but at least makes it less common for people to pretend to be multiple posters or disown their previous “guest” posts, etc. I personally would support that, though in reality even that would reduce use based on what happens in other communities when this is applied after it previously wasn’t Or the moderator could be more active in deleting inappropriate posts. But that is always a slippery slope as people would be quick to suggest this was being done with bias and its nearly impossible to prove otherwise.
For the most part this is a self-censoring community. When people truly step over the line, usually a bunch of people call them out on it. It’s imperfect but it is what it is. If you don’t like it, realistically your recourse is to leave. |

I agree with the above post.
There are good info and bad info on the net and on this site. You just have to ignore the bad ones and read the ones that are interesting and informative.
Most of the posters here are pretty good, as compared to some of the sites I visit. There will always be bad ones, just ignore their posts and don't respond to their posts. |

I belong and post on a message board for a hobby of mine. Every once in a while an argument gets started i.e. you own such and such, loser that is junk...I own this and it's better...and two seconds later the post is removed with red letters saying please see the rules of our forum- no trash talking.
We do register posters- usernames can be initials, nick names, etc...it ties to a valid email address and every so often a test email is sent asking someone to reply to verify the email and user name is active and real.
In my experience the bad posters go away and the forum is clean and actual discussion gets done. It is also good because you start to identify with regular posters and sometimes meet them and are like oh wow your different than I imagined.
Now, boards like the WWP Today board had a lot of trash much more than here. That board went to a registered user name and the bad posts ceased and the number of posts declined, but largely due to the removal of the junk. However, the number of valid posts such as in the Handyman forum are still there and still coming in.
I think on this forum because there is so much good discussion, we would see some smaller threads, but the same amount of information flow. You'd see announcements of a meeting, a discussion about what is to come at that meeting. However, you may lose the garbage posts that detract from the topic like XXX TC person annoys me because he he needs a haircut or wears bad ties.... |

I thought part of my tax $$$ goes to this.
Make it paid and another free board will pop-up somewhere else |
