CRANBURY — A former dairy is the latest piece of property acquired by county taxpayers in an ongoing effort to preserve open space and farmland.

The 61-acre property off Plainsboro Road was purchased in February by the township. The county recently announced a $450,000 contribution from the Middlesex County Open Space Trust Fund toward the nearly $900,000 purchase price.

While the township of 2,000 residents has already used public funds to preserve more than 2,000 acres of land as open space, officials are still looking to acquire the remaining 41 acres of the Reinhardt property.

“It preserves the agricultural heritage of our community,” said township committeeman Dan Mulligan. “Most of the land preserved is still being worked as farmland growing corn, soy beans and spinach. It’s really something that’s beneficial to everyone.”

Is this the portion of the Reinhardt property on the south side of Plainsboro road? Toscano is already preserved, is that correct?

If that is true the only major properties left are Reinhardt to the north of Plainsboro road, a couple of smaller properties on Dey road and essentially some acreage east of 130.
