Structure would cover emergency, cell service.
A new cellular communications tower that will boost service to the western part of the township could be built at the Cranbury Firehouse site.
The Township Committee approved a resolution Monday to allow a cellular telephone carrier to replace an existing lattice tower that carries antennae for police and emergency communications, with a new one.
A new tower would hold antennae for as many as four cellular telephone companies as well as police and emergency communications.
In July, the committee voted to allow Sprint to conduct a feasibility study to determine whether the site would be able to hold the tower.
Sprint conducted the study at its own cost. Cellular carriers will have to bid on the construction of the tower in a competitive process that allows the township to control the nature of the structure, such as its aesthetics and height, according to Township Attorney Trishka Waterbury.
