Does anyone know if Cranbury will be getting Fios?? I have seen a few Verizon trucks in various locations through town, but now sure if they were running lines for Fios.

Thanks!

Not going to happen. Verizon has weaseled out of their promise to provide FIOS to all of NJ, despite charging us for it for the last several years:

I don't understand this

"The settlement also sets up a process in which customers in census tracts with no broadband can request such service from Verizon, if there are 35 or more of them, and each signs a contract for at least one year of service with a $100 deposit."

I have no broadband....does this mean if we get a total of 35 customers they come out and wire the town?

He said the new plan allows Verizon to only be as fast as DSL, which is about 5-10 Mbps and it is only fast in one direction.

Make that barely 3 Mbps down and 0.6 Mbps second up on a good day.

It also says that cellular data service qualifies as "broadband", so if you get Verizon cellphone service, that's good enough.

Your census area has to have no alternative broadband option, not that you just personally don't. Cranbury has Comcast and AT&T and Verizon Wireless so we are not considered an area without a broadband option, even though in practice that gives Comcast a monopoly.

DSL can be a heck of a lot slower than that.

Actually our only 2 true broadband choices are Comcast & Verizon DSL, although Verizon DSL is only "broadband" in the legal sense of the word - it is MUCH slower than Comcast in practice. Our other "broadband" (again legal sense) choices are Verizon Wireless, AT&T Wireless, Sprint and T-Mobile - however they are much to expensive to be practical for home use.

So that leaves Comcast as our only choice for true high-speed broadband. The NJ Board of Public Utilities really let us down by allowing Verizon to weasel out of their promise to provide FIOS to every household in NJ.
