The flag is up on Carnegie in Princeton and people are skating! Any chance we will be skating on Brainerd soon?

Hi all,

We all enjoy ice skating on the lake so a bit of information.

- To skate on the lake we need to have a consistent 8" of ice depth. This is for both insurance and safety reasons. When the ice starts to freeze the Public Works Department takes daily measurements.

- The issue which also affects us right now is the railing. The stairs that allow access to the lake from Main St and the green flag for skating connect to the railing. With the fencing up we cannot get the stairs in place.

I know my daughter is anxious to get skating and no better motivation exists than a 5 year old asking the same question over and over. I am keeping my fingers crossed that we can get skating this year.

Hi all,

We checked the ice this morning in 18 different spots. The thickness ranges from 3 1/2"-- 6 1/2" which is below minimum standards. Please do not go out on the ice.

While our Fire Department does a wonderful job drilling and preparing for ice rescue, we don't need to put their skills to a life threatening test.

Thank you,

Jay

Jay,

Can you clarify if the Township simply advises on skating of the lake or enforces? There has been a group of people, adults and kids, ice skating and playing hockey on the lake for the last hour or more at least. Since there is at least one or more adults, it seems supervised.

It is enforced and officers have asked people to leave if they see them out there.

We don't want to stop fun and do want to allow skating this year. We just need to ensure the ice is safe. We are sampling daily and seeing areas that are 6 inches in spots and just a little way away it's half the thickness.

We all appreciate your patience and understanding. Hopefully, we'll be skating soon.

Jay,

Will the lights for night skating be reinstalled?

The TC needs to discuss and approve the re-installation of lights for skating and PA system so we could play music like was done years ago.

The county does not provide cost sharing for these items so we have to discuss this at budget time.

We checked the ice at the boat dock today and it is only 3 1/2 inches with a lot of slush. The same spot last week at this time was 5 inches.

We are not checking ice further out due to safety concerns. So please do not go out on the ice.
