I truly find what was done horrible,in poor taste, and certainly worth deserving of punishment at home from the parents. And my kids most certainly would be punished. I agree this goes beyond kids being kids.
What I don't get and bothers me is why the tie to the HS. This was not being done on school grounds, no faculty member was present and it was not during school hours. The school should not be involved from a discipline or news standpoint.
I see opportunity on many levels for the school to use this as a teaching moment. If there are disciplinary problems because kids are singled out or bullied as a result then that is a school matter outside of a news story.
I feel bad for students and faculty who are now tied up in something that was beyond their control. I also don't like TV crews at the school as a ny station did. |

Since the school has not publicly discussed any disciplinary actions, we're speculating on their reasons. It's possible the action was taken because of the underage drinking and not the offensive game itself -- though the focus on the bloggers outrage was limited to the game. It's not uncommon for schools to remove kids from extracurriculars and sports if they get caught using drugs or alcohol even if off school grounds.
FWIW, two of the kids in the picture are Cranbury residents. Anyone know how they got home after their drinking game? |

I think the issue raised was more of the newspapers and journalists bringing the school into the situation. Why should the school be blamed or part of the news stories when the actions were not related to the school.
this is a very tough lesson all around. First on inappropriate games and sensitivity. Second on the danger of social media and knowing cameras are all around.
My mom used to say before doing something what would you think or feel if that action were posted on the front page of the NY Times. That was before social media and cell phone cameras. Now we see on a daily basis real life examples. |

Whether or not the school was reacting to media attention, the school has taken numerous direct actions including suspending the kids, dropping them from their extracurriculars and sports, sending numerous emails to all parents about the issue and planning school-wide events for students to confront the lessons from the incident. I believe the previous poster was raising the issue of whether the school had a specific basis on which to suspend the kids given it didn't happen on school grounds or with any school affiliation involved and technically, based on local Princeton Township laws, they did not break any laws since underage drinking in a private residence is not against the law there.
The disappointing thing for many other students is they are being judged by the actions of a handful of students many of whom already had reputations as less than stellar pillars of their community. They did not reflect the best of Cranbury or Princeton before this event but now reflect on everyone collectively after it. Perhaps the school is overreacting a bit to try and compensate for that, to go over-the-top to demonstrate those behaviors don't reflect the cultural norm here. |

Perhaps there is more to this game than I know, but the way the story reads, the students essentially set up a competitive game and named the teams for two groups that hate each other. While I personally think Nazi vs. Jews is in poor taste, I'm not sure it's substantially different than Cowboys vs. Indians, or for that matter choosing a school mascot glorifying the act of pillaging, raping and killing innocent people (AKA "Viking").
To summarize, this seems like a poor choice that should be addressed by the parents and the school should have resisted the urge to over-react in response to bad publicity.
Additionally, I do hope the student who chose to expose the students publicly for her own gain, and who appears to be basking in the glory of her own self-righteousness, learns something about grace and humility. |
