October 28th - Mayor's Update

Some updates on town and local news ....

Greetings Cranbury,

I hope everyone is well. Here are a few updates on town and local news.

The Public Library has signed a lease to occupy the Odd Fellow’s Hall building on North Main Street. They plan on moving in the next few weeks. Hopefully this will only be a temporary location. No word yet from the state on our pending grant application, but it is my understanding that an announcement should be soon. Keep your fingers crossed!

First Presbyterian Church of Cranbury is hosting a drive-in movie night on this Friday, October 30th in the church Parking Lot. They will screen It’s The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown at 6:30 and Beetlejuice at 7:15PM. BYO snacks/candy/refreshments and make sure your car radio is working or you will be watching a silent movie!

The First Presbyterian Church is starting up their annual Thanksgiving Food Drive .

Items needed are: Frozen turkeys; canned vegetables; canned fruits; soups; cranberry sauce; cereal; pasta/sauce; crackers; rice; boxed potatoes; stuffing; cookies; pancake mix/syrup; cake/muffin mixes; olives; peanut butter; jam; jello/pudding; canned nuts; granola bars; copy paper boxes (for packing the baskets)

Donations can be left in the box on the porch of the Fellowship Hall at 22 South Main Street, Cranbury, NJ. If you have any questions, please call (609)395-0897. Food collection will run through November 19.

Halloween is this Saturday. Main Street will be closed to vehicular traffic from Westminster Place to Cranbury Station Road from 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm. The extended hours are purposefully designed to enable townsfolk to be able to Trick or Treat in a physically decompressed and leisurely manner. The Cranbury Police Department, Volunteer Fire Company and First Aid Squad will be out on the street to assist in encouraging social distancing, maintaining traffic control and manning tables with hand sanitizer and refuse cans. We have printed up flyers which are available at Town Hall for those households that do not wish to participate in any Trick or Treating activities.

Finally, I would ask that everyone who is planning on Trick or Treating to please respect the rights of those who do not wish to participate. Please look for indications (lights off, no decorations and the aforementioned flyers) that the house you are visiting does not wish to participate in Halloween festivities. Please educate your children and those in your charge to be very mindful of these indications. If a house you are approaching does not appear to want visitors, then please do not approach it. We want Halloween to be a fun and safe day for everyone in town.

Cranbury Pizza is continuing to work actively towards returning soon to Main Street. We hope that they will be able to open their doors before the New Year.

We continue to be vigilant and active in defending against any return of the COVID 19 virus.

We have not received any reports of a substantial increase in COVID cases in town. We have a few inquiries to Town Hall as to why we are not releasing daily numbers on any new COVID cases. There are two reasons for that. The first is that we simply have not had(until last week when one new case was reported) any cases to report. The second is that the county has stopped directly reporting them to the township. Instead they have directed us to go to the county website. Additionally we have also been queried as to why we do not release demographic information on those cases that are reported. It would be a violation of Federal Law for us to release that information. We cannot and will not do that.

We are not going to be able to dredge Brainerd Lake this year. We on the Township Committee were hopeful that we would be able to get this done for the town this year. Unfortunately with the state mandated lake lowering deadline of November 1st fast approaching, our contractor, whom we chose based on the NJ Local Public Contract Law requirement to make award to the lowest responsive bid, was unable to provide us with a timely plan for beginning the process. I apologize to everyone in town for this and especially to those who live on the lake and were attempting to coordinate construction on their properties during the dredging process. No one is more frustrated and disappointed at this turn of events than I am. I remain optimistic that the Township Committee and its professionals will be able to address the dredging next year.

Finally, please make sure if you haven't already to please submit your election ballot. Fill it out and either drop it in the mail or better yet bring it over to the Police Station and place it in the secure ballot box.

Thanks as always Cranbury. We may not always agree but I will continue to serve all of you as best I can!

Mayor Matt Scott
