Mayor's Update - January 12, 2021

Hello Cranbury Neighbors,

I hope you are doing well and staying warm during this cold January. As we turn the page onto a new month and new year, I wanted to share a few useful updates for our residents.

January 9 was National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day. Now more than ever, it is important to acknowledge those who wear a uniform, preserve the peace, and maintain law and order. We are especially fortunate in Cranbury to have a good working relationship with our police officers, whom many know by name and by face, and who are integral members of our community. Thank you to Chief Owens and his team at the Cranbury Police.

Cranbury community extends condolences to the family of Brian Sicknick. On behalf of the Cranbury community, we extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Officer Brian Sicknick, who grew up in Middlesex County and had ties to our community. From his early days growing up in a New Jersey hamlet, Brian wanted to be a police officer. He enlisted in the National Guard six months after graduating high school in 1997, deploying to Saudi Arabia and then Kyrgyzstan. Joining the Guard was his means to joining law enforcement, his family said. He joined the U.S. Capitol Police in 2008, where he served until his death Thursday after the attack on the Capitol on January 6. Flags are flying at half-mast in New Jersey.

Sign up for the COVID-19 vaccine. Last week, the State of New Jersey opened up a site to register for the vaccine. Get your name on the list, so you can get the vaccine when you're eligible! https://covid19.nj.gov/pages/vaccine

Do you need assistance during COVID-19? Please see this notice from the New Jersey Department of Human Services: https://nj.gov/humanservices/library/slides/DHS_services.pdf

2020 Census - Cranbury Over-Achieved! Cranbury was at the front of the pack in Middlesex County for the 2020 Census self-reporting. At 86.1%, we easily beat Middlesex County's overall response rate of 74.4% and the New Jersey overall response rate of 69.5%. Thanks to all who responded to this decennial United States practice to count everyone in our country.

Cranbury Public Library building is moving forward. After learning of the grant in November, the process is moving forward quickly, and the project will be going out for bid in January, with the goal of breaking ground at 30 Park Place West in the spring. Thanks to all the residents whose donation was matched to make this possible.

Did you know we have a new organic farm in town? Allison Akbay's farm off Plainsboro Road has just started production over the last few years. Check out the feature from Rutgers, filmed last summer in Cranbury: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GOFmrvwZ9gs#t=25m10s

Showcase your Cranbury pictures! Help the NJ State League of Municipalities to showcase the beautiful State of New Jersey, and send a picture of Cranbury for their PHOTO CONTEST: http://www.njlm.org/showoffyourcity

Please stay safe, stay warm and enjoy the winter as the days slowly get longer.

Michael Ferrante, Mayor
Cranbury Township Committee
