What's going on with Cranbury busing to the high school? The buses are so overcrowded that some kids get no seats, which is illegal. Besides being unsafe for a bus that travels on a highway, it seems like a major liability to the Township waiting to happen.

Back in the 70’s we rode to school in the back of a pickup truck. We were fine. I’m sure they are much safer in a school bus standing. Hopefully they are sitting three per seat like they are supposed to.

Based on the subject line, I thought maybe Cranbury was targeted to become the next Martha's Vineyard.

To clarify some of the information previously posted…..The capacity of a school bus is 54 passengers. Bus routes are based upon the number of passengers assigned to the bus (regardless of whether or not the student actually rides the bus). More than 54 students would not be assigned to a particular bus. If the bus is overcrowded, it is most likely due to students taking a bus route other than the one assigned. Additionally, most juniors and seniors drive or get a ride to PHS and don’t take up the seats that they were assigned. Any liability would be with the board of education not the township.

All School Buses operating in NJ are required to have lap belts for each passenger. Any School Bus manufactured after February 2019 are also required to have lap and shoulder belts.

Common sense therefore dictates that Standing is illegal, if common sense does not compel Federal Law Chapter 6.5 of Motor Carrier Safety Laws prohibit a School Bus from being driven with any Standing passengers.

These Laws are for the Safety of your Children and are not subject to personal opinion or local customs.

Additionally, School Bus Companies are required to have annual inspections of their vehicles

Cranbury parents should be demanding of their Board of Education the following
1. Name of School Bus Company
2. Age of buses ( for seat belt compliance as noted above)
3.BOE Member designated to review Safey standards of School Bus Company ( i.e Inspection stickers on each Bus)
4. Require a review of Driving Records of each driver assigned to Cranbury ( note the Driver of the Mt Olive School bus was found to have multiple driving violations)
Ask the Parents of the Mt Olive School Bus collision in 2018 if they wish they had required their Board of Education to familiarize themselves with Safety Laws
