Affordable housing plan approved

A plan to build 20 affordable housing units on Old Cranbury Road was approved July 6 by the Planning Board at a joint meeting with the Township Committee.

The two boards, and township professionals, met to review the application and discuss issues such as the location of an entranceway to the community, access for emergency vehicles, parking, sidewalks, height and design of fencing and the appearance of the porches.

The plans were submitted by Cranbury Housing Associates and will be the first of three developments expected to meet the township's obligation for the third round of state-mandated affordable housing.

Mark Berkowsky, the president of CHA, a nonprofit organization that has designed the township's previous affordable housing sites, said the plan is similar to other affordable housing units in Cranbury.

The plans call for six buildings on a township-owned 2.66-acre parcel that borders the Four Seasons development. Of the 20 rental units, four will have one bedroom, four will have three bedrooms and the rest will have two bedrooms.

Housing will be available for those with incomes in the low to moderate range as defined by the Council on Affordable Housing. For a family of four living in Middlesex County in 2006, that range is $47,900 to $76,640.
