But the timing seems suspiciously coincidental.

No Trenton is totally different than American Water.

Their test sample showed there was an increased chance that the water contained disease causing organisms. The above standard turbidity (cloudiness) provided a medium for microbial growth indicating the presence of bacteria, viruses and parasites. So our water was potentially dangerous that day. AmWater increased the chlorine level to clean it up, but more chlorine can't be good for you either.

The gist was they tested it recently and found it to be "cloudy" above the recommended level. They trace the cause to the recent need to repair something that caused it and has since been corrected but introduced extra particles to the drinking water. They state it is generally safe but as a precaution if you have a weak immune system (old, infant, pregnant, other health problems) that you consider other drinking sources in the short term...

Ooh and we pay top dollar to American Water for our drinking water?? this is potential stomach cancer territory. where are all the board's chronic complainers tonight when this is a premier topic worth complaining about. I think we should not pay our water bill this month.

Get a good filter on your water and you will be fine!!!

You can call a plumber and they can install a filter - it is not expensive and makes the water safe to drink/shower/etc - its for the whole house! OR if you know how you can do it yourself!

Where did you buy the whole house filter??? and what type did you get

We have been getting ours for years from Herr's Plumbing. They usally have them in stock at their business. A lot of our neighbors also get them there too.

The brand is Aquapure - they are a highly recommended brand...

We use this whole house filter:

We replace it once every three months.

I called American Water for more info and they came over and got a water sample from my house. Supposedly they are sending it to an "independent" lab for testing. I hope that's true, but somehow I think they will just tell me that there's no problem and of course the water is safe to drink.

Does anyone know how/where to independently test water coming out of the tap? It seems clear that a third party tester would be more objective. I've noticed a stronger chlorine smell lately, but don't know if that is related to this issue.

What is there to say? They suck. Good luck with your don't pay protest though. Utility companies get all kinds of government protection on consumer liability. Just look at PG&E in California. First they get the state to let them raise rates specifically to pay for repairs to the gas main in the San Bruno area. Then they use the money for bonuses instead and never repair the line that was used to justify the fee hike. Then they come back a couple years later, believe it or not, and use the same un-repaired line as an excuse to raise rates again even though they already got the money the first time and didn't do the work. They get the fee hike again and then schedule the actual repair for 3 years later. Then the pipe explodes and levels an entire neighborhood killing a bunch of people. And despite all that the company is under a strict limited liability protection from the state.

I'm sure that it wasn't a rich neighborhood, right?
