Mayor Winthrop Cody did not file for reelection, and no one put in their name to take his place. By Christopher Sacco | 12:10am No petitions have been filed for Cranbury Township’s one three-year committee seat that will open at the end of the year. Republican Mayor Winthrop Cody now occupies the seat but did not file for reelection. Since no one filed a petition prior to the April 11 deadline, the only way to become a candidate will be to receive write-in votes in June 7’s primary election and then accept the nomination before election day on Nov. 8. http://eastwindsor.patch.com/articles/no-petitions-filed-for-cranbury-committee
There are a few folks that I'd feel comfortable writing in. Problem is that I don't know that they'd want to be written in!

Actually there is only one seat in contest (Win Cody's). So four seats remain filled.
But it is an interesting question.

I too am wondering what happens if nobody files? Will there only be 3 on the council? I am not sure what happens?

What is the process now? Are write-ins invited on a certain date, or up to a certain date? I know it's not unusual to see that happen.

It used be called civic duty, then service to the community, and then
giving back to the community....whatever the term, it is not in fashion, and people are too busy, have other priorities
..whatever... We suffer as a community because of t his.

Having attended the meetings and reading this board I have come to the following conclusions.
1) There are two to three residents who attend the meetings because they have an actual interest and offer input.
2) The other people attending do so when there is an issue they oppose or want the TC to personally help them on an issue.
3) When the TC tries to explain an issue if it is counter to the group there complaining then the explanation is lost and all the attendees hear is the TC is not doing what "I" want so they are evil. Even if they are doing something because of a greater good or legal requirement.
4) Then there are the people who read the press or the group of people that don't get what they want then come here and complain about how partisan, rude, ego, etc... so and so is/are or worse complain only based on comments here.
Lastly, our town is so small that I find the things that upset people to be so trivial and think how grateful we all should be for our town. A siren- well get more volunteers and maybe there will be no siren as we'll have enough people, a side walk ordinance- well shovel your sidewalk and there would be no need for an ordinance, easements in shadow oaks- well let people through without seeking permission and there is no issue, the budget- well yes I don't want to pay more, but then don't appeal your taxes and make sure the warehouses don't either (sarcasm here) since the biggest factor is one penny is not worth as much as it was a few years ago or last year, etc...
So yes, I think we hit the point of sanity where people are saying why run for the TC when people who do it to actually help the town are vilified and have to spend time away from family.

I tend to think most folks have done so out of service. It is a thankless job - people get maligned for making decisions by folks that are often pretty far removed from the decision making facts. It's the way of politics. I am not sure who is sitting in the wings that's qualified or interested in running for either party but I take my hat off to anyone willing and able to commit the time and take the heat.

It's hard to imagine why anyone would rationally opt for this job. You have to expend a ton of time campaigning and probably even some money on fliers and stuff. Then it takes a huge time commitment for the position itself. There is a token stipend so it’s certainly not about the money. And when was the last time anyone ever got the respect and appreciation of the community regardless of what actions they take? They can 100% guarantee anonymous people will snipe at them here and even in person behind their backs. And anyone who looks ahead can see they have some major no-win situations ahead on affordable housing, the dam, the Liberty Way project, debt and declining tax bases. And we're far too small a community to use to jump-start a broader political aspiration. All that leaves is personal ego or an incredible personal sense of pro-social public service with a thick skin.

Time to be thinking about some good write-in options.
