When all but a handful of Cranbury School students in a class make the honor roll, does it mean the students are succeeding academically or that the bar for standards is set too low, district officials asked each other last week.

After more than two hours of discussing the current grading system and honor roll requirements, the board on July 18 introduced a policy that would replace the standard letter grades with a numerical, 100-point scale, which they said would help students see how well they have mastered each subject. The policy is slated for adoption in August.

But to the disappointment of district officials, a number of teachers and a few members of the Student Council, the board decided against tightening the honor roll requirements, saying it will reconsider the issue next year after the district gets acclimated to the new point system.

Chief School Administrator Carol Malouf said a number of teachers and a few students said they favored an honor roll system that is more challenging than the current one. Only students in sixth, seventh and eighth grade can be awarded honors.

"The teachers wanted this year to be more strict — for high honors to be a real achievement," Ms. Malouf said. "They felt honor roll didn't have any status because everyone was on it."
