Committee hopefuls discuss construction on Route 130 and Brick Yard Road The candidates for Township Committee have different ideas on how to handle affordable housing, open space and the development of warehouses east of Route 130, as well as on what should be done with the Unexcelled property on Brick Yard Road. The candidates spoke to The Cranbury Press about these issues and more as part of a three-piece series leading up to the Nov. 7 election. The candidates are incumbent Democrats Thomas Panconi, the current mayor, and Pari Stave, and Republicans Rob Smithers and Diane Stasi. They are vying for two, three-year seats on the committee. One topic the candidates discussed was what to do with the 400-acre Brick Yard Road parcel, the largest piece of unpreserved open space in the township, where the Unexcelled Chemical Corp. exploded in 1954. The land has sat unused ever since. Viridian, a company that specializes in environmental cleanup and redevelopment, purchased the property in January and has spent more than $8 million on the land's cleanup. The N.J. Brownfields Redevelopment Interagency Team, a group of professionals from state organizations that advises municipalities and developers on how to redevelop contaminated land, has been working with the township since November 2005 to determine what should be done with the parcel. Recently, the township reached out to the state Department of Environmental Protection to talk about the area. Mr. Panconi, Ms. Stasi and Ms. Stave said there is no easy way to determine what should be done with the property because of safety concerns. Ms. Stave and Mr. Panconi also said there are environmental issues because the area has wetlands. ...
