Don't buy dogs from mall or pet shops, for many of them are from puppy mill, and buying from them, the consumers are unknowingly supporting the brutal practice of puppy mill. Besides, dogs can have serious health problem. I adopted my Maltese from a co-worker, who purchased him from a pet shop. After we had him for several years, he developed Cushing's Disease, then neurological disorder...it was very painful for both of us. I certainly don't want you to go through that kind of pain. <br /> <br />If you want to purchase, you will be much better off to buy from reputable breeders, many of whom participated in reputable dog shows. Sometimes they have dogs that not qualified for showing (e.g. the bite went off) and therefore it's available for sale as pet. The price is outrageous - expect to pay $2,000+! (However, my dog's medical bill costed me at least $4,000 in his later part of his life.
