Neighbors - The response to this question is correct. According to our Township Code (Chapter 162: Animals, Article II:Dogs) running at large of any dog is prohibited. This includes cases as mentioned in this email chain as well as allowing dogs to run off leash in our Parks, Preserves and all other public land. Of course, your dog can run as they wish on your own property, but once off your own property , an unleashed dog is in violation and the owner is susceptible to fines. Clearly, people want whats best for the pets and dogs often enjoy the freedom and excitement of running free but the law is clear. There is no place in Cranbury where a dog can run off leash. Unfortunately, there appears to be a growing disregard of the Codes as many people repeatedly allow their animals to run off leash through neighborhoods, parks and preserves in Cranbury. Additionally, when confronted by residents, there have been reported incidents of belligerent behaviors on the part of the dog owners. Understand that people who choose to obey this law are at a distinct disadvantage as they keep their dogs on leash. There have been several reported altercations between dogs when one is on and one is off leash. My own rescue dog was attacked and underwent life saving surgery after an attack by an off leash dog. People believe that their dog is different, but the law is the law. Unfortunately, enforcement of this law is through our Police Department. I for one would rather our Police force focus on keeping our homes and streets safe and not having to respond to this type of behavior. But if you do see a dog off leash, please call the non-emergency Police number and report the incident. Get a picture of the dog and the owner if you can. Another alternative we all have is the establishment of a dog park where these people who wish to have their dogs exercise off leash can do so. We have a group of interested residents who are investigating the potential for such an endeavor. If interested in helping, please contact me at Town Hall and I will get the information to you. In the meantime, let's all be respectful of our neighbors and our community. Leash your dog - no matter how nice and well mannered it is and please pick up after them. Thank you - Susan Goetz, Township Committee
Technically they still cannot run around not on a leash, even there in the preserve. But who is going to enforce it?

For all practical purposes, the Cranbury Preserve has become the unofficial dog run here in Cranbury
an unnatural nature preserve! yes?

My neighbor has had issues with their invisible fence once the wire got chewed by some animal the second time the dog got out chasing a squirrel and appeared it was afraid to go back in. From his point of view he is concerned over the safety of his dog getting loose. I had to place boards around my fence as the dog would dig under and get loose. In those circumstances there is a ton of worry about the harm that could happen to the loose dog and I am sure from others seeing a loose dog. Serving a ticket in that scenario to me doesn't make sense as there is no intent.
If a dog is running loose in a yard with no invisible or hard fence and leaves the yard or in a park that is a different story and I would expect the officers to issue tickets.

No --- the promo should be "Cranbury's Most Wanted Mutt Owners". Noboday at the township level takes this seriously. While walikg my leashed dogs I have been attacked by two dogs that were "restrained" by an Invisible Fence" at two different times. On the second occasion I called the police. The police came and spoke to the owners but took no action. The dogs still are a menace and now I can no longer walk my dogs down that street!Warnings just don't get the job done. Its about time the township took a stand and stops pussy footing around the dog issues.

If a group of residents want to buy land and maintain a dog park I am okay.
However, I don't want a dog park if it means Public works has more work to do and this creates a cost to us.
Also, let's be honest. Cranbury is not a condo or apartment town like Plainsboro or Jamesburg. Most residents in Cranbury have yards and dogs can run in them. Dogs are not kids they don't need social time with other dogs. Having shown dogs and been involved with breeders I find dog parks controversial. In a town like Cranbury it's purely for adult social gatherings. In a town like Plainsboro they are a necessary evil as many residents don't have a place for dogs to run and play.

Dogs need a place to run free!
A doggie park could provide a safe place so they can run and the residents could be very safe.
Needs a no leash fenced area they can play as well for non aggressive dogs so they can run free.
If the animal was not penned up in the house all day some of those incidents I have been reading here about animal attack might not have happened.
That is tortorous on an animal to do.

We've got tons of open land, and a town full of big dogs that need to run.
At the end of the day, we've all got to be responsible for our actions. This includes taking responsibility for whatever problems our off leash dogs cause, including having them put down. We dont need one size fits all laws for every single isolated incident.
Working/herding dogs gotta run. It's in their blood. I'm not stopping, sorry!
Work on your recall training folks!
Get a large yard then and fence it so your dog can run free. Or take them to existing dog parks, there are plenty in the area. As you said, people have to be responsible for their actions. That includes not taking on getting a working or herding dogs if you aren't prepared for the commitment to find legal means to exercise them. Breaking the law by taking it off leash on public property is not taking responsibility.

And these tactics from the very group that labels those who disagree with them "trolls".....the hypocrisy is deep here.
