New kindergartners meet and greet each other
Nancy Mckiernan wrapped her arms and a towel around her son and pulled him up onto her lap, before straightening the swim goggles on his forehead.
"I'm sad to see him go because he's my youngest, but I'm happy for him," she said. "My little man is off to school."
On Monday, the Barclay Brook-Brookside PTA held its very first Kindergarten Ice Cream Social, a pre-September party to welcome new kindergartners and give them a head start on meeting some of their classmates before the first day of school.
The party, held at Eagle River Day Camp, was not just about ice cream. Many kindergartners, clad with goggles and orange swimmies, cooled off in the camp's pools, while others opted to get their faces painted and enjoy lemonade or a hot dog. A legislative action committee was also present, to make sure parents were registered to vote.
About 240 people showed up for the event, which surprised PTA members Tracy Kapoor and Leslie Koppel-Egierd, who came up with the idea in the end of spring and never expected it to be so successful. There are 189 kindergartners entering Barclay Brook and about 85 of them attended the social.
