Mayor's Update - April 30, 2021
Dear Cranbury Residents,
It's been great to see a "return to normal" over the past few weeks. We had a successful stream clean-up (315 lbs of trash and recycling collected!) and a vibrant yard sale sponsored by the Cranbury Business Association (CBA).
At Monday's Township Committee meeting, we received an update from the Economic Development Advisory Committee (EDAC), a group partnering with the CBA and thinking holistically about how to ensure Cranbury is a dynamic and welcoming place for businesses and visitors. Thanks to EDAC chair Darek Hahn and the team, as well as Township Committee liaison Matt Scott for their leadership on this important initiative.
Library Building Groundbreaking - Yesterday was a historic day for Cranbury - we broke ground for a new, freestanding library! Cranbury was awarded a grant in November: one of 38 selected from 139 applications, and the first project to move forward. This has been the culmination of over ten years of dedication from our Library Board and Foundation volunteers and was made possible through the donations of residents and the matching NJ State grant. Library Director Marilynn Mullen and Library Board President Kirstie Venanzi were joined by Assemblyman Dan Benson, Senator Linda Greenstein, and myself. State Librarian Jennifer Nelson also attended, and shared data about how new libraries have a durable positive effect on children's reading scores for up to seven years. You can check out the outline of the building at the open space at the end of Park Place West. Also, feel free to watch the video of the groundbreaking ceremony:

May 1-2 - Clean-Up Weekend - Bring your acceptable materials to the DPW Yard at 100 Dey Road; 7:00 am to 3:00 pm, rain or shine. The DPW crew will be on site to help unload your unwanted discards. Acceptable materials include household items that are too large to fit inside your trash tote, like mattresses, lawn furniture and other large bulky items. NO household trash, paint or hazardous waste items will be accepted. If your item still may be valuable to others, please consider the "Buy Nothing Cranbury" Facebook page instead to re-gift your item and keep it out of the landfill (https://www.facebook.com/groups/buynothingcranburynj) or post it on the local Freecycle group (https://groups.freecycle.org/group/PrincetonNJ/posts/all).

May 21 - Memorial Day K-8 Contest Entries Due - Cranbury Lions Club is sponsoring a Memorial Day Contest for students in grades K-8 to help the Cranbury Community commemorate our heroes of yesteryear and today for their great courage. Students can spend some time understanding Memorial Day and Veterans Day, ask family members what it means to them and transform their knowledge into a poster or essay. See the flyer on contest details and where to submit a digital poster or essay. Winners will be posted on the Cranbury Lions Club website at
https://www.cranburylions.org/
May 30 - Memorial Day Parade - We will not have a traditional parade down Main Street this year; the long-term planning required just was not possible with all the COVID uncertainty this spring. However, I will host a Memorial Day Ceremony which can be viewed on the Cranbury Lions Club website at
https://www.cranburylions.org/
on May 30!
July 5th Fireworks - We are a GO for our traditional fireworks event in Village Park.
September 11 - Cranbury Day and Helene Cody 5K Race - We are a GO for this annual day of fun and community connection. Stay tuned for details as it gets closer.
COVID Vaccine Update - Vaccines continue to be increasingly available to our residents. As of April 22, at least 74% of our adult residents have received at least one dose of vaccine, leading Middlesex County. More than 54% of our adult residents are fully vaccinated. As of April 19, all those 16+ were eligible to receive the vaccine; the decision on 12-15 year olds is expected from the FDA by mid-May.
Regards,
Michael Ferrante, Mayor
Cranbury Township Committee
