Christie tells mayors to expect major changes at state agencies

The state's Council on Affordable Housing "has to be gutted" and the state Department of Environmental Protection transformed into a "more effective, efficient, consumer-friendly agency," Gov.-elect Chris Christie said in a roundtable meeting today with Ocean County mayors.
"We talked a lot about COAH during the campaign," Christie said, after he and Lt. Gov.-elect Kim Guadagno heard the mayors put the housing council's demands at the top of their complaints about state government, and suggestions for reducing local property tax burdens.
Affordable housing obligations cost local taxpayers too much and usually don't result in housing being built, so "we need to pick that fight," Christie said. "It's going to be one of our early priorities."
