Post subject: Re: Ridiculous: Letter from CWA Local 1037's President about the State Budget...
The purpose of unions is to negotiate for fairness. They were NOT meant to bleed the system dry. I'm all for people getting a fair wage for good work, but public employees are not motivated by any profit motive. I'm sure that most of them do a decent job. But, who can stand the malingerers who game the system for their own benefit? The pensions that some get are INSANE!!!!!!!Double-dipping, the graft, the corruption is terrible!!!
Being a public servant is just that-to serve the public. If you don't like it, go get a job in the private sector and rob people blind that way instead!
Anything in financial services should do the trick.

Well, those who voted for him ignored the fact that he lied about his wanting to be Senator(not completing a full stint) and ignored his relationship with the union head. I can't believe how people voted blindly and that he would truly be tough in negotiations with his girlfriend. He wants a job in DC and is looking for more power. It was rumored he was trying to be Hillary's VP candidate. He realizes selling the state to the Unions is his best bet because the Dems at the state level still believe unions vote blindly.
I just found out that last night at dinner that my friend was told the union was preparing massive protests and was going to force people in his position and above with threat of fines if they did not go to Trenton to protest. I know other members of unions (non-state) who have forced time off without pay in order to allow the company to hire more union workers.
That's what I like about unions, do what we say or we will fine you. Totally ignoring the fact that the union works for the individual not themselves and fines should not be imposed.

I think it is ironic that Corzine's campaign positioned him as "above the corruption" because he is so rich. However, it feels like he looks out from the podium at us foolish worker bees and shrugs, as if to ask "how do you think I got so rich?"

The fact that they have such a large influence is scary. I was speaking with a NJEA member and also a state employee (2 different people). They both could not understand what interest they had in protecting the rights of people who are not even members of the union today. The sole interest for the union was the fact that they are a profitable business and want to continue making their money. The 401K issue for future members should have been a no brainer and easy decision for the union to accept because it would benefit their current members through lower costs in taxes and have no adverse personal impact.
The reason Obama is currying favor with Corzine is not that he is seen as a financial guru, but that he's in bed with the unions.

Conservative-
I think it is painfully obvious that folks like this, and the influence (fear mongering?) they wield in Trenton are the reasons why this state will not move toward fiscal stability any time soon.
I heard of this letter and find it far beyond ridiculous. It boggles my mind how these people can demand the level of concession and entitlement they do, irrespectice of the state's ability to pay for them. I'd love to see a complete analysis of this. By impeding the state's ability to negotiate contracts/benefits that it (or, lest we forget, we the taxpayers) can afford, these union "leaders" increase the fiscal burden on tax payers. From an individual member's standpoint, are the benefits being protected in excess of the costs of doing so?
By fighting the cuts proposed in the budget process (and castigating the proponents of such cuts as "enemies" --very professional, by the way) are they making it more affordable for their members to live in this state? This ridiculously adversarial we vs. them rhetoric in this letter is nonsense. Simply disgusting.
Let me propose a novel idea. Let's live within our means. But no, good ole Hetty seems to suggest it is entirely appropriate to insist on a level of benefits, etc. and THEN pass the onus onto the taxpayers (including those he/she represents) to find a way to pay for it. I have no idea how this person sleeps at night. Kudos for contributing to the fiscal destruction of our state.

Post subject: Ridiculous: Letter from CWA Local 1037's President about the State Budget...
Below is a letter from the head of CWA local 1037. The letter gives insight as to the mindset of our state employee unions.
As I read the letter I stopped and asked myself what ever happened to the nobility of public service and when did it become a shake down of the tax payers?
Bottom line the letter below is a shinning example of everything that is wrong with New Jersey....
“Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Despite the newspaper stories to the contrary – we did not get defeated in the Legislature.
Here’s what happened –
There were a half a dozen bills to cut our benefits including proposals to cut pension benefits by 9%, to put all new workers into 401K plans, to change the formula used to compute the pension from the average of the final 3 years to the average of the final 5 years, and to eliminate anyone not working 35 hours a week from healthcare and pension.
We launched a huge fight with our allies in AFSCME, IFPTE, AFT and the NJEA which included not only membership mobilization, but an extensive media campaign which brought pressure on the Legislature.
We beat back:
All cuts to Parks and Forestry;
All layoffs;
9% cut in pension;
New workers will not go into 401Ks;
We keep 3 years final average salary;
Part-timers keep pension and healthcare (where they have it);
But our enemies (Senators Steve Sweeney and Barbara Buono) are powerful and held the budget hostage.
They extracted 3 concessions as a price of their vote:
A bill changing the Normal Retirement Age for new workers from 60 to 62
At the end of our contract – ALL local government and state government workers lose the Lincoln’s Birthday holiday by statute
New part timers will have to earn $7500 a year to be in the pension plan instead of $1500. (All of our part-timers meet this requirement.)
Do not be discouraged. We protected our members and we have a Fight Back plan!
We demand that Corzine veto the bills that violate the contract.
If he does not, we are filing a grievance. We will seek to enforce the contract.
We are putting together a Day after Thanksgiving plan (which I don’t want to put into email.)
We are putting together a “Reward our Friends – Punish Our Enemies” plan which I also don’t want to put in an email.
Bottomline – We fought hard and beat back the worst. Many legislators are very angry at Sweeney and Buono for holding the budget hostage over the retirement age of people 25 years from now and over Lincoln’s Birthday (which saves nothing). We too will remember this and reward our friends and punish our enemies.
We don’t always win – but we do always fight! Thank you to every Shop Steward and every member who wrote or called their Legislator or came to Lobby Days or rallied to save our Parks. Your participation in mobilization, as always, made a HUGE difference in the outcome of this struggle.
In Solidarity,
Hetty Rosenstein “
