You could borrow a Kindle from the library. Kindles are not backlit so that wouldn't help you. But if you have an iphone, android phone or ios/android-powered tablet you could get the free Kindle apps and use the listennj.com site to download free kindle books.

Any idea what's going on? Don't know. Your lines are underground there right? Usually that takes care of a lot of the problem, like squirrels blowing up transformers.
