Seems to me and I don't have a line by line budget that the operating expense increase of 435K is really high and I wonder what that details. That is a 9.6% increase. Seems to me that there could be cost reductions in that area. I'd like to see what that means for the average home owner increase in terms of cost change- $100 a year $200 a year. This 8.6% increase comes after we have already increased the budget last year by 17%.
True. The fact that they ran as for re-election and yet tried to say that they were not liable for past decisions as well should have been a concern. It is these individuals who pressed for the revaluation, who are pushing for the ball park and now looking at PNC. In 2009, the current TC members have to be voted out if we want a chance to regain a sense of financial stability.

As for new blood on the committee, Wayne Wittman, the lone Republican on the TC, is not seeking re-election this year. Win Cody is running on the Republican ticket, John Ritter is running on the Democrat ticket.
If I recall correctly, in the last two elections (and definitely the last election), the incumbents (who ended up winning) promised to spend money on "needs", not "wants", and the fact that they are considering the PNC bank purchase indicates they are not abiding by this campaign promise. The PNC building is a "want", not a "need". I disagree that this is a one-time chance. There is always the possibility that the building will come back on the market in the future when we are in a better financial position.
As a town, we need to keep in mind that there is both township debt ($23M) and school debt ($8M). We still do not know what our COAH obligations will be, the trees above the bridge on Main St are an issue, with unknown costs of either a study and/or removal, plus there are always various expenses that come up, some that are probably not included in our current budget.
Also, we need to remember that money which comes in the form of grants, whether county, state or federal, is still OUR money. We have paid taxes to all these entities. It is not "free" money.
I suggest you contact all the TC members and let them know your opinion on the PNC bank purchase. I will do the same.

Thank you, and yes I agree.
Last time I voted along party lines for the incumbent Democrats. But from this point forward, regardless of my votes for the State and National issues, I will definitely cross party lines and/or withhold votes for any member of the Township Committee that votes for new spending measures that aren't tied to our schools, police or doing whatever it takes to limit new development here and keep taxes in check. And I will withhold votes for any Committee member who supports closed sessions for anything other than personnel matters (i.e. interviews for jobs or accusations of impropriety). I will support Township members, regardless of party affiliation, who refuse to proceed with major spending initiatives, like the Babe Ruth ball field or the PNC acquisition, without a vote by Cranbury eligible voters.
We definitely need new blood. It is scandalous how irresponsible to current majority of members are.

Point well taken. Let me clarify then. We need fiscally conservative Democrats and Republicans. In General we need fiscal conservatives on the Township Committee. Hopefully we can all agree on this?

I have to agree with the above poster. I'm a democrate as well and the TC members are really going against the party ideals of looking out for those who need it most (i.e. the seniors and low income individuals in town). They also do a lot without regard for or with no respect for public comment other ideals of the true party.
I hate to say this, but unless there are new democrates running in 2009, then I urge everyone to vote only for new blood. Don't vote for those running for relection because there are three seats if only two new comers run. Vote only for the two new comers. If a person is relected by default and with only a handful of votes that is a very strong statement.
Last year we had a chance to show them and I thought we did with Mr. Stannard and Mr. Stout barely beating Mr. Hasselbach, but I was wrong and they went business as usual.
So in 2009, make a statement don't fall for the it was not us it was prior TC's comments and don't vote at all for anyone running for reelection. It's fine to vote party for a New Democrate or New Republican. Just vote for new blood.

Please don't make this a Democrat or "liberal" thing. I am a Democrat and liberal yet I have been very vocal here against the PNC purchase or any new spending and completely agree some of the people on the Committee and this town are either in denial or irresponsible.
So when you stereotype this as going along party affiliations, you lose me.
I am totally appalled at the Township Committee at this point, not just for their lack of respect for the debt and spending, but the fact that they seem to think everything they do should be in closed session and that they should make major decisions that affect the town with little or no real sense of the popular support for them.

Spending up in Cranbury
Committee introduces municipal budget
Friday, February 29, 2008 2:16 PM EST
By Maria Prato-Gaines, Staff Writer
"CRANBURY — The Township Committee introduced a $12.4 million budget Monday that could increase municipal taxes 8.6 percent.
The budget, which is 1.4 percent larger than last year’s spending plan, includes the hiring of two new police officers and increases in pension costs and funding for the public library and affordable housing.
Revenue has decreased in the budget, primarily due to a reduction in the amount of reimbursement the township will receive from various sources for previous farmland preservation.
If the budget is approved, the municipal tax rate will increase from 35 cents per $100 of assessed valuation to 37.2 cents. Under the proposed rate, the owner of a house assessed at $668,000 would pay $2,485 in municipal taxes. "
In case some people have not been watching - we approved an additional $956,178 to the school 2008 budget. This is additional to our 2008 budget that was approved back in February which increased our municipal taxes 8.6 percent (even before the extra spending by our school). Now, we want to purchase PNC bank for a new library or keep as a parking lot. Hm... how much more shall we be taxed for this future impulse purchase. Can't wait to see what my tax bill will look like this year.

Why do people keep referring to robber"ies" when the poster who first mentioned it has admitted they were referencing a rumor of a single incident?

I looked into this. I have to say while I do not support increased spending the police staff does need to be increased based on what reasons I found.
First off, I have no issue with the fact that the police are being used at the school since there is no increased cost of having them there as opposed to another area of town. I also like the fact that our police chief comes out to be in town. Most police chiefs don't leave an office.
What this increase in staff does allow is for the town to guarantee there are 2 cops on duty at any particular time and to ensure the shift changes are manned, people are covered while on vacation, while someone may be out on leave, etc...
The safety to me is first and foremost. We're talking a better return on this investment as opposed to bigger spend with the ball parks, a possible stand alone library, etc..
If my family is in danger I like to know there is a large enough staff to come out. I could careless where I get a book or a field I never use.

So how did a rumor of one roberry become of pattern of "robberties" (plural)?
