| Breaking: Cranbury approves budget
Posted: Tuesday, April 15, 2008 10:18 PM EDT CRANBURY — Voters approved a $16.6 million school budget by a vote of 287 to 146, Tuesday. The budget was $956,178 larger than the previous year's and carried a school tax rate increase of 4.13 cents per $100 of assessed valuation to 85.46 cents. At that rate, the owner of a home assessed at $668,923, the township average, will pay $5,716 in school taxes, a $276 increase. According to school officials the increase is driven by continued enrollment growth and additional staff, contractual obligations for salaries, wages and health benefits and a capital project that consists of a roof replacement. Voters also selected three to serve on three open three-year seats on the Board of Education. Jennifer Cooke lead the vote-getters with 336 votes, Evelyn Spann received 326 votes and Kevin Fox received 324 votes.
