Rediscovering his passion Artist shows his works at Gourgaud By Madeleine Johnson Posted: Friday, January 11, 2008 10:39 AM EST CRANBURY — For as long as he can remember, Princeton resident Jim Morgan has been immersed in the art world. And now, after rediscovering his love for soft pastels in the past three or four years, he’s making a name for himself at local galleries, including Cranbury’s own Gourgaud Gallery, where his work will be on display through Jan. 27. ”I just came upon (the gallery) one day while walking through town and applied,” Mr. Morgan said. “This process began two years ago and, at the time, I hadn’t been in any galleries.” Having shown his work in Trenton, Lambertville, Montgomery, Pa., and even having an ongoing corporate exhibit in Manhattan, N.Y., Mr. Morgan is getting used to sharing his works with the public, even if it still is a bit jarring for him. ”It’s a little unreal,” he said. “I really only have myself in mind when I’m creating my paintings, so the fact that someone can get that same enjoyment or see the same things I do is very flattering. It continues to amaze me.” Educated at Pratt Institute where he was an art major, Mr. Morgan’s day job has him working as the art director for publications such as The New Yorker, Gourmet, and House and Home, which balances with his painterly endeavors to completely satisfy his love for the artistic process. ”I love typography, I love great photography, so that satisfies that part of me,” he said. “The painting part is really just about being outside sketching, having no sort of constraints being put upon. You’re really doing your own thing.” Mr. Morgan moved to Princeton from Red Bank a few years ago. Ironically, it wasn’t until he left the arts-rich town that he picked up his pastel sticks again, having been inspired by the landscape of his new home. ... http://www.packetonline.com/articles/2008/01/11/cranbury_press/news/doc47878ae5b4f7b260201082.prt
CRANBURY — For as long as he can remember, Princeton resident Jim Morgan has been immersed in the art world.
“This process began two years ago and, at the time, I hadn’t been in any galleries.”
Having shown his work in Trenton, Lambertville, Montgomery, Pa., and even having an ongoing corporate exhibit in Manhattan, N.Y., Mr. Morgan is getting used to sharing his works with the public, even if it still is a bit jarring for him.
”It’s a little unreal,” he said. “I really only have myself in mind when I’m creating my paintings, so the fact that someone can get that same enjoyment or see the same things I do is very flattering. It continues to amaze me.”
Educated at Pratt Institute where he was an art major, Mr.
You’re really doing your own thing.”
Mr. Morgan moved to Princeton from Red Bank a few years ago. Ironically, it wasn’t until he left the arts-rich town that he picked up his pastel sticks again, having been inspired by the landscape of his new home.
