Ok, thanks for the clarification. Mr. Johnson definitely doesn't have my vote then...

The above poster is right the owner of Harold's (the flower shop proposed site) is a Mr. Johnson, NOT Mr. Hasselbach.
Also, the slate has been ready for months so the candidates have been running prior to that incident.
not same person

I may have this confused. Mr. Hasselbach isn't the same person who was in the Cranbury Press a month or so ago because he owns the lot that used to have a gift shop and got bent out of shape when the planning committee denied use as a flower shop without a new zoning variance? If not, my mistake. If so, I can’t imagine wanting to vote for him, at least if the facts from the Press stories are correct. I apologize for not checking the original articles but the Cranbury Press website is down right now so I can’t…
That person was on the Planning Committee, then when he didn’t get his way on the decision (which simply asked him to go through the proper variance process for the new store) he threatened to tear down the house entirely, despite being in a historic zone. Then when he was told he couldn’t because it was protected he backed down and sought the same variance they asked him to all along. It seems like he was pretty ignorant of policy for someone who was actively in the local government. And it seemed like a pretty childish move to threaten to tear down the entire structure if he didn’t get his way. He had to know the cost to tear it down, even if he could, would greatly exceed the cost to seek the variance. And if he didn’t, that doesn’t demonstrate the level of common sense I would want on the Council. I would also question the motive for seeking the Council if he had just gone through all that and weeks later is running for a seat.

Thanks. I'm thinking of running in 2 years actually. My job keeps me too busy right now with travel and I can't get home in time to make the start of the meetings on most nights, but there are things on the horizon which if they work out will allow me more time to be home with the family and to put in the required time (change in offices from NY to NJ for one). If that works then I'll run.
Honestly, I do not know Mr. Hasselbach on any level other than what I see and read. He is a long time resident of Cranbury and he has also served on the TC. I'm not sure how far back the website goes, but take a look at the meeting notes from back then as they might give you more insight.

Where can I find more info about Mr. Hasselbach besides the Cranbury Press article?

The below is only my opinion...
We need more long term residents or residents who are committed to be here long term, but mainly residents who understand there are those who don't have all this extra money to throw away on taxes on our TC. We need people understand the impact of raising taxes and forcing the cost onto our seniors and others with fixed incomes on our TC. Not people who will simply raise taxes in order to build million dollar ball parks or change Cranbury into a WW. If you want to be a WW then move there. IMO, Cranbury is a small friendly town who should be fiscally responsible and preserve the culture and family orientation that it has today.
Given that the ball field, increased taxes, increased debt and employees all happened under the present TC I don't see how they can say they are for saving money or fiscal responsability. Instead of looking for grants or raising my taxes perhaps they should say no more employees (Police officers are an exception) and no more ballparks, skate parks or other items until we have the money.
I am urging all the people I know to vote for Mr. Hasselbach.

I am in favor of either Mr. Stout or Mr. Hasselbach.

In addition, Mr. Stout says that fiscal responsibility will be one of his main issues.
”We need to continue to do things smart and for less, with transparency, safety, as well as good customer service,” he said.

Cranbury candidates outline their goals for the township

By Sean Ruppert, Staff Writer
CRANBURY — Two Democratic incumbents and a Republican challenger are vying for two seats on the Township Committee in this year’s election.
Mayor David Stout, Township Committeeman Richard Stannard and former Committeeman Art Hasselbach are running in the Nov. 6 election. Each is vying for one of two three-year seats that are up for grabs. The makeup of the current Township Committee is four Democrats and one Republican.
Art Hasselbach
Republican
Art Hasselbach, 64, has been a Cranbury resident for 47 years and lives on Route 130.
He earned the Republican nomination through a write-in campaign in the June primary.
Mr. Hasselbach owns Beta Crafts Inc., and Hasselbach Properties LLC in Cranbury. He describes himself as being in semi-retirement.
A Hightstown High School graduate, Mr. Hasselbach has attended courses at Rutgers University and the New Jersey Institute of Technology. He was previously elected to a term on the Township Committee in 1998, after serving a year on the board as a replacement member. He also has sat on the township’s Planning Board.
He and his wife, Carol, have two adult daughters and four granddaughters.
Mr. Hasselbach’s father, Art Hasselbach Sr., who is deceased, also served on the Cranbury Township Committee.
Mr. Hasselbach says he is running to bring more of a diversity of ideas to a committee that has one Republican.
”I want to bring balance back to Cranbury, more like we had in the past,” Mr. Hasselbach said.
The former committeeman says he hopes to make it easier for people to start or make improvements to local businesses by cutting red tape.
Mr. Hasselbach says he also hopes to establish a “work order number” system for residents who would like to check on the budget of public projects. He would like to organize documentation for township spending on a project-by-project basis. He says this will make it easier for people unfamiliar with the public record-keeping system to find information.
In addition, Mr. Hasselbach says it is important for Cranbury to have committee members who have enough time to dedicate to their positions. With a semi-retiree’s schedule, Mr. Hasselbach said he thinks he will have the most time to put into the job and attend county- and state-level meetings that may affect Cranbury.
” I feel I have the most knowledge, experience and time to help Cranbury work through the constraints of the state,” Mr. Hasselbach said.
Richard Stannard
Democrat
Richard Stannard, 56, has lived in Cranbury for 10 years and lives on South Main Street.
He works as a lawyer for Munich Reinsurance America in Plainsboro.
A graduate of Southern Connecticut State University, Mr. Stannard earned a bachelor’s degree in political science in 1973. He also holds a law degree from Fordham University in New York, where he graduated in 1990.
Mr. Stannard is finishing his second term on the Township Committee, and served as mayor in 2004. He also has been a member of the Planning Board for the past four years.
