Grant to help pay for park and field improvements

CRANBURY — The Millstone Park driveway and Village Park Little League Field are going to get a facelift after the Township Committee approved a resolution at its Monday night meeting to accept a $100,000 grant which will finance the projects.
The township plans to split the county open space and recreation grant down the middle with half going toward the Millstone Park entrance realignment project and half dedicated to a number of improvement projects for Village Park Little League fields, Township Administrator Christine Smeltzer said.
Committee members said Monday that the township is planning to align the Millstone Park entrance with Washington Drive, making an intersection at Old Trenton Road, for safety reasons.
”It’s safer to align them up than to have them staggered,” Ms. Smeltzer said. “It doesn’t make too much sense where it is now.”
Some of the fields may need to be shifted as a result of the driveway project, Mayor David Stout said Monday.
As for the Village Park Little League field, township officials said improvements are coming straight from the Cranbury-Plainsboro Little League Organization’s wish list.
Officials plan to equip the field with two batting cages, a shed, a public address system, a scoreboard, foul-ball netting, safety fences and clay bunkers, as well as other improvements, said Ms. Smeltzer.
”This will benefit 500-plus children who play baseball and softball in the league,” Ms. Smeltzer said. “It’s pretty bare bones over there right now.”
