Excerpts related to the Babe Ruth League Baseball Field: "1. Contract No. 35 for the Babe Ruth League Baseball Field Improvements Project, Phase 1 is hereby awarded to Precise Construction, Inc., of Freehold, New Jersey, for $297,000.00, as the lowest responsible and responsive bidder. 2. The Mayor and Clerk are hereby authorized and directed to execute an agreement with Precise Construction, Inc., consistent herewith." ... Public Comment: "The Mayor opened the meeting to public questions and comments on those items not on the agenda. Mr. Jack Ziegler, 9 Prospect Street, spoke concerning his displeasure with having to wait until after the Township Committee voted on the Resolution for the award of the bid for the Babe Ruth Baseball Field to speak and not being allowed to speak before the adoption of the Resolution. Mr. Ziegler objected to the Township spending $300,000 for a baseball field without getting input from the public beforehand. Mr. Ziegler referenced the Township spending “a fortune” on remediation of the property already. Mr. Ziegler stated by the time everything is done, the cost will be $500,000. Mr. Ziegler also asked who would maintain the ball field and stated the taxpayers have a right to know who would maintain it. Mr. Ziegler also asked who would be allowed to use the field once it is built. Mr. Ziegler urged the Township Committee to think before spending. He also referenced the Township wasting money for the Liberty Way project and stated the recent Election showed the taxpayers are getting tired, both on a local and County level. Mr. Edward Reilly, 11 Cranbury Neck Road spoke concerning the issue of busing. He indicated he is one of three families that wrote a letter to the School Board asking for busing. Mr. Reilly stated he agreed it is the School Board’s responsibility to determine who gets bused. He reported until this year all the students along Cranbury Neck Road had been bused and explained the cross walk is on the side of Symmes Court and to get to that cross walk safely from the South side of Cranbury Neck Road is not possible as there is a lot of leaves, shrubbery and no sidewalk. Mr. Reilly stated the residents believe it is unsafe for the children to cross Cranbury Neck Road over to the cross walk on Symmes Court. Mr. Reilly reported he had counted over 200 cars between 8:00 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. over the Summer. Mr. Reilly thanked the Township Committee for acting so quickly on the issue and for trying to help. Mayor Stout indicated the Township had received a copy of the letter from Mr. Reilly and the other residents which had been sent to the School concerning the problem.. Mr. Arthur Hasselbach, Route 130, spoke concerning his displeasure with the Babe Ruth Baseball Field and its expense. Mr. Hasselbach mentioned he had attended the meeting on Open Space and had also read the report which stated, “at this time a Babe Ruth Baseball Field was not needed”. Mr. Hasselbach recommended the Township should consider placing affordable housing on the Wright South Property instead of having a baseball field, should the State rule municipalities would not be allowed to sell their Regional Contribution Agreements. Mr. Hasselbach added, he had been involved, when he served on the Township Committee, with the first round of Affordable Housing. Mr. Hasselbach indicated the Township had negotiated with the developers of Cranbury Green to get the units which presently exist and they provided the Township with a park as well. Mr. Hasselbach raised his concern with future obligations for affordable housing being very expensive. Mr. Hasselbach said he felt the Township should re-visit the baseball field and not spend any more monies and urged the Township to bank the land for affordable housing. There being no further comments, the Mayor closed the public part of the meeting." |
