| State aid to schools may increase
By Davy James, Staff Writer Posted: Friday, December 14, 2007 10:36 AM EST Schools in Cranbury, Jamesburg and Monroe would see an increase in state aid under a newly proposed funding formula announced Wednesday by Gov. Jon S. Corzine and Education Commissioner Lucille Davy. The long-awaited revision to the state’s school funding formula, unveiled at a press conference in Burlington Township, would increase aid to Cranbury by 10 percent, with the $760,000 a year in state funding raised to $836,000. Jamesburg stands to receive a 20 percent increase in aid if the plan is approved, from $3.9 million to $4.7 million. Under the new formula, Monroe would receive 10 percent more aid, increasing state funding from $4.4 million to $4.8 million. School officials from the three districts said they want to reserve judgment until the new figures undergo a deeper analysis. ”We haven’t had a chance to closely review the numbers yet,” Cranbury school board President Joan Rue said Thursday. “We anticipate limitations on what kind of funding will actually come to the district, and don’t quite know how the figures will affect our program or relief to taxpayers as of now.” Jamesburg school board President Don Peterson said he was planning to meet with administrators Thursday, after The Cranbury Press late-afternoon deadline. ”We have just seen the numbers and haven’t really examined them closely,” he said Thursday. “We’re planning on having a meeting with the board secretary this evening to go over the funding closely.” ... http://www.packetonline.com/articles/2007/12/14/cranbury_press/news/doc4762a0b8394a8533964082.prt |
