CRANBURY — A new year usually signifies out with the old and in with the new, but this timeless adage does not apply to Cranbury’s 2008 political spectrum.
At Monday night’s annual reorganization meeting both recently elected incumbents took their official oaths and the Township Committee reappointed David Stout as mayor.
Richard Stannard is serving his third term on the committee, and Mayor Stout his second. The two Democrats were re-elected to three-year terms in November. This will be Mayor Stout’s second year as mayor.
Both had their families on hand to hold a Bible as they swore an oath to support the constitution and justly perform the duties of their office to the best of their ability.
After the swearing in, Committeewoman Pari Stave nominated Mr. Stout to serve the year as mayor and Mr. Stannard quickly seconded it. Ms. Stave, Mr. Stannard and Committeeman Tom Panconi, all Democrats, voted for Mayor Stout’s nomination. Committeeman Wayne Wittman, the lone Republican, was opposed the selection.
In Cranbury, the mayor has no special powers and his few extra duties include running committee meetings as chairman, making some appointments and sitting on the Planning Board.
After the formalities Mayor Stout addressed the dozen-or-so spectators and thanked his family for all their support.
”It is my privilege and honor,” Mayor Stout said. “I think we’ve made a lot of progress.”
