[quote="anon-052s"][quote="anon-s1sn"][quote="anon-052s"] There are, however, many people who are unfamiliar with the various pros and cons of pursuing a new library. People who are against a new library can be far more effective using a public forum to explain their position than going to a library board meeting. Or go directly to the source of library planning and policy:
Thursday, January 8th, 7:30 p.m. Library Board meeting at
Cranbury Public Library
wrong place

Then go to a TC meeting and raise the issue and ask for feedback.

The $600,000 of tax dollars set aside by the library board for a new building is not a TC issue. The library is funded by your tax dollars at the minimum rate allowed by law (unless Cranbury chooses not to fund a library at all). The library board gets to decide what happens to the tax revenue that funds the library.
A little history...
Several years ago, when properties were re-assessed, the library received a huge influx of tax revenue and ended up with a large budget surplus. The board used some of the money to fund payroll, programs and services and also to set aside about $600,000 to go toward a new building. As revenue has dropped in recent years, the library has not been able to maintain some of the services and programs. However, the surplus money has already been set aside for the new building.

Would the Township Committee approve that expenditure? I'd sure like a straw poll of how they might vote for that. Lets have some offical comment from TC members please.

The 600,000 would not be used for bricks and mortar...the money raised would be used for that. The tax payer's money would be used for computers, furniture and the like.

$600,000 of the money they have for their new building of books is tax dollars

Actually, it is quite unclear to me, is the proposed new library going to be built with raised fund or with tax money?
The foundation will raise the money for bricks and mortar. Any tax money is used to run the library.

The library board have presented unsound statistics to support current staffing levels much less a new building.
Library reports from board meeting show:
20,000 website hits each month. what the director doesnt state is that repetitive staff access to email, catalog, databases are 3/4 of that stat.
Watch the staff count the door, do they subtract themselves, deliveries, students who come in and out after school?
Program participation stats are inflated. Librarians bring personal friends and family to events, game night, clubs. beefs up the crowd. After school kids counted in program number just because they hanging out.
Sure go to board meeting, but watch what goes on in the current library. Do the real numbers justify a $3.5 building?

Problems at the library. Wasteful habits, time and attendance abuse, mismanagement. Look before you build new space.
If you make claims, then you need to provide proof of these or at least make your claims specific. Otherwise you sound like an idiot.

Voicing opinions is one thing. This forum is great for that. Representing opinions as facts is another. If you truly want the library to listen or take your opinions seriously, you must go to the library board meeting - this is a public meeting just like the township committee meetings. Minutes from these meeting are public as well. As far as presenting pros and cons, how reliable are your sources? How can we trust an anonymous blog?

Why would going to the library board meetings be a waste of time? These are also Cranbury residents who volunteer their time and care enough to run our library. They are, by law, public meetings. Your voice will be heard. A waste of time is thinking that anonymous posts with dubious facts will influence voters. Is it one person, or it a dozen? This forum is good for venting - some people are angry about stuff... but as far as influencing people, it would be an insult to residents if they believe what is posted - especially in this current conversation.

No need to be defensive. Going to a library board meeting and explaining why you think we don't need a new library is a waste of everyone's time. The people on the board have already heard most, if not all, of the objections and they have already made up their minds. It doesn't make them bad people.
There are, however, many people who are unfamiliar with the various pros and cons of pursuing a new library. People who are against a new library can be far more effective using a public forum to explain their position than going to a library board meeting.
I can understand why to people in favor of a library would prefer for objections to be raised in a relatively private forum, like a library board meeting, but it's disingenuous for those people to suggest that raising objections at a board meeting will be productive.
