They added cat licensing rules and it made no sense. There have been no issues of domestic cats giving people rabies and the feral stray cats aren't going to be licenses anyway. It was a silly, unnecessary rule. Licensing my dog makes sense. Licensing a house cat that hasn't been outside for a decade and doesn't even want to, makes none.
I don't have skin in this game but don't support the licensing issue, agreeing with several points raised earlier. Vaccinating a cat is one thing, licensing an indoor cat is another. But my main agreement is with the point raised by one poster about slip and fall. Several folks completely capable of clearing their sidewalks decide not to in every snowfall. That's a bigger peeve that unlicensed kitties. it's unneighborly and inconsiderate, and is not in line with our town's regulation.

Relevant how? It does nothing to establish whether indoor only cats are contributing to the problem.
Someone already did miss the sarcasm.
The video was a joke. In being a joke, it becomes relevant by emphasizing the point that this topic isn't really an important issue.

Can we at least be consistent? Are we going to create laws for every possible, hypothetical, incredibly remote risk or are we going to leave people responsible for doing the right thing without laws? Right now the answer seems to vary by the day, or the sub-committee, in this Township.

For those of you thinking that your rights are being infringed upon or that you are being taxed unreasonably. Even if you have insurance to pay for the very costly shots to insure you will not get rabies the trauma is NOT worth it! I was the recipient of such an encounter and the time and money spent along with the stress involved is ABSOLUTELY not worth not getting your pet cat or dog the vaccination. Its a nobrainer--- get the shots; get the licence ;and get over it!
I do not think most people are getting the point on here. Cat owners are saying that they DO get their cats the rabies shot but DO NOT license them. Most cats DO NOT wear collars so even IF the cat was licensed and GOT OUT it would not matter if it were licensed or not. My cats do not wear collars , never have , never will. BUT THEY GET THEIR RABIES SHOT EVERY SINGLE YEAR!!!!!! So even if and that is a big IF my cat got out no one would know if it were licensed or not.

Your unvaccinated cat gets out, get's bitten by a racoon, or fox or possum, comes back, turns into a gremlin, scratches your kid, --- let put the cat down. To prove that the cat had rabies, let's cut off the head, send it to Trenton to get it checked out in the lab. Take your kid to the ER, slim chance there was saliva on the claw when the cat scratched, get a bunch of shots that cost a ton of money.
Or get the cat vaccinated and licensed. How much if the fee? The cost of a discounted movie ticket?

As expected the report does not indicate any specific study of rabies in house cats.

The above is not true. We have an indoor only cat. We also get him vaccinated. A few years ago he walked up to us and brought a dead bat with him. Our vet said we were very lucky we did the vaccine as bats are known to be heavy carriers of rabies.
I am opposed to licensing, but very much in favor of the vaccine. If not for it our cat would have been killed to ensure the kids were all safe.
Your anecdotal example does not invalidate questioning whether the cited but undocumented statistic was based on house cats versus pets with access to the outside.
As you say, you oppose mandatory licensing which is what this is about. Licensing of indoor-only cats is something that should only be done if there is a substantial public health risk. I have still seen nothing to demonstrate there is. We vaccinate our pets too, but I don't see why the government needs money from me to license a cat never is outside.
I was only responding to your comment that an indoor cat is not exposed to rabies.
I see two different issues.
1) I fully see a need for a vaccination.
2) I do not see a need for licensing cats.
I don't see what a license does. If a cat outside bites me I have very little chance of tracking the cat down by going to town hall. In fact, it would be hard to track down the cat in any way aside from going home to home.
A dog has a collar and if it's loose without a collar you can still fairly easily find the owner. As I have yet to see a stray dog in town. We do have many feral cats.
I don't see what licensing proves. I do see what vaccinating the cat proves.

What if by chance your cat does get out and doesn't have a license and bites someone? It would have to be decapitated and sent out for rabies testing. You would feel pretty horrible that you know it has a rabies shot but the person euthanizing it doesn't and your pet died for no reason!!
Ok, so even if I did get my cat licensed, they do not wear collars so how would anyone know if it were licensed?? And I am not about to start letting them wear collars just for that face. Some people in this town are a little crazy!
