[quote="publius"]I think that most politics stink to high heaven. If someone held a gun to my head, I would pick the Democrats. At least at the national level. All progressive reform seems to come from them. They are far from perfect, but, the gop seems to live out the definition of insanity-doing the same thing, but, expecting different results. No. not really. They go into office with high, noble ambitions and then they have to scale down and sell us whatever crap they can get away with.
Like I said, if you held a gun to my head.........the Democratic philosophy and platform are more appealing. But, the reality is far removed from textbooks and blackboards (white boards).
I only agree MORE with their grand vision and overarching philosophy. They do seem MORE inclusive, and more interested in the "welfare" (poor choice of word) of the average person.
I consider myself an INDEPENDENT PROGRESSIVE.
ooooooooooooooh.................big college term.
I just think that the Democrats are somewhat closer to my belief system the the gop is AT THIS TIME. I just don't like whackos very much. The gop sold itself out to the nutjob factions in order to gain power and now is the time to pay the Devil back.
I also consider myself a Jeffersonian Libertarian.
"It matters not to me whether my neighbor has one God, twenty Gods, or no God. It neither breaks my leg nor picks my pocket"-T. Jefferson.

Publius,
Question, on a federal level you clearly represent the Democratic party. Do you hold the same view here at the state level or are the Dems exempt from blame locally?

John Stewart nailed it last night when he cornered Jim Cramer and called him out for his touting and pumping of the same stocks which tanked recently. Stewart may be a comedian, but, he is a pretty smart guy. He knows a good fleecing when he sees one.
Both major parties have their fingerprints on this mess, but, I do blame the gop more for their ability to blow smoke up people's backsides with such deft ability and such straight faces.
They sold out to the religious whackos years ago and most of the whackos have NO critical thinking skills what-so-ever. They just fall in line with whatever their Fascist leaders tell them, and it was easy to transfer this zombie-like cult worship to a political party. So much so that it was almost effortless and seamless. Thomas Jefferson told us that a democracy can only work if the electorate is educated and can think for themselves. I hope that the pendulum will swing wide the other way and bring some sense and sanity to our financial and political worlds once again.
I pee my pants laughing when I see the "leaders" of the gop like Limbaugh, Palin and Joe the Plumber!!!!!!!They could barely run a large trailer park. Michael Steele is flipping and flopping like a freshly-landed tuna! He says what is on his mind, as a moderate, then he gets the faxed-in memo reminding him who he and his party are beholden to.
The evil overlords posing as "Christians".
YUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think I need a shower now.

Actually, I agree with you. I have learned a lesson in not believing the hype (and the bubble). It's incredible that we went through two bubbles in less than 10 years!

We're all going to Hell in a handbasket!
Buckle your seatbelts and enjoy the ride!!!
I believe that a lot of our economic woes comes from the tired, old supply-side, trickle-down theory of economics. Perhaps it worked well enough in the 18th or 19th centuries, but, it is an antiquated philosophy which has scammed people for the last 30 years. Capitalism is supposed to be the "greatest good for the greatest number" according to Adam Smith, an 18th century economic writer who penned the tome, The Wealth of Nations. Even he did NOT believe in rampant runaway free markets. Although the rabid fanatics would have you think that he did, unless you actually read the book!
The money flow has been tilted radically upward and away from the average person. Tax laws and consumer protections have been chipped away by BOTH major political parties in this country, and corporate regulations are a farce based on absurdities and wooly-headed disractions and diversions.
"Don't look at what we're doing over here...look over there. Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain". The politics of distraction has working extraordinarily well over the last couple of decades, with the total complicity of MOST of the American general public.
The carrot of wealth was dangled in front of Mr. & Mrs. Public while the rug was pulled out right from underneath them!
It's funny when politicians say that "government is the problem", and then THEY set out to prove THAT VERY POINT! Then they come to us with hat in hand, on bended knee asking for a hand-out when it all blows up in their face like some pin-headed nephew who can't control his spendthrift ways.
They are shameless!!!
Before we can fix this mess we must first realize that the market can do some things well, and the government can do some things well. Either one by itself cannot function. They need each other in order for society to operate properly. Don't listen to these clowns who promise you great wealth with no pain. They are evil liars!
Most people will NOT be rich!!!!!!
The gov. is there to protect people from the predators out there who use to market to their own advantage. The "capitalists" threw a monkey wrench into the works and screwed all of us because of their own greed and rapacious appetites.
Have we learned nothing from the mistakes of the past?
I expect the Limbaugh types to scream at me now.
